Engine temperature

On a drive back the other day engine temperture went sky high to 120, no traffic. Attempted to turn heater on but no hot air. Is it the water pump? Don't think it's the head gasket as there is no mayonnaise in the oil and there is pleanty of water. How do I find out what's going on?
Thanks

Mayo is very uncommon with hgf .. Replace the cooling tank cap first and check for leaks .. Re bleed the radiator, if it happens again it will 99 percent be hgf

No hot air usually means the coolant has been lost from the system - I'd try starting it and check for bubbles/gas in the coolant - like FD my money is on an early HGF.

I really don't want it to be HGF
Did manage to get temp to occassionally fluxuate back to 90s for a half a mile or so then it would come straight back up again.
Anyone know good garage in Inverurie area to sort this out?
