Limp mirror...

Post by Rich H » Wed Apr 22, 2009 8:20 am

Hey all,

My pax side mirror is looking decidedly limp, I don't think it's the mechanism I think it's whatever holds it to the car, is it easy to get to? I can see a screw hole in the back of the mount piece but no way of getting to it really.

Any ideas? (I have considered and dismissed the no-nails option already!)

Rich

To take the whole assembly off, from inside the door remove the black circular cover from the top hole and remove the screw. The bottom mount is a stud, so it should then come away.

The hole you see that you cannot get to is for removing the mirror part from the base.

As tut says, then take out off the mirror from the assembly and rough up the ball part of the mechanism with some sandpaper. This'll give it some grip back.

Cheers gents, it's the mirror to plinth joint that is limp, the mirror mech seems ok it's either a rotten screw or it's come loose.
I'll get it fixed later today.

Well it's all become academic now, 30 yards from home it fell off and bounced down the road
Broken mirror and scratched case. Think I'm going to get a pair of black metro mirrors and replace both.

How does the back shell come off?

The mirror itself clips on to the back shell around the edges. You have to be very careful in taking it off, work around the edges with a wideish blade.

The rear shell is attached to the swivelling bracket by a very strong spring. The swivel is attached to the door mounting bracket by the screw that you could not get at on the top, and a stud at the bottom.

Picture to follow.

Nice one cheers gents. One of the 2 plastic lugs on the base plate has sheared leaving the screw and stump in the mount on the car.

That exact same thing happened to me. I bought a replacement from eliseparts. If its not broken (from the fall) keep the body coloured section but you'll need to undo the spring (refer to tuts pics) from either the body coloured section or the base plate (which ever you find easier). That is a total b!tch and will probably be what takes all your time. You'll need to do the same with the new mirror and swap over the main stalk and mirror. As tut mentioned be careful when remove the mirrored section, take your time and care, the little clip sections break easily.

The new mirrors stalks that go into the main plinth may be a bit too long and may need chopped slightly (mine did anyway).

The whole mirror is held on by 2 hex screws (4mm I think) and a phillips screw. I removed the end mirror section without taking off the whole wing mirror section by using a screw bit and set of plyers, sounds crap but the phillips screw holding the ming mirror plinth on was totally rusted on. If you do that be careful, you'll easily scratch the plinth if you slip.

I used to buy the mirror from Rover for around £15, but Alan got me the complete assembly from the door bracket up from Dingbros for £10.
