Scholar.

Post by pete » Mon Apr 27, 2009 4:39 pm

Does anyone have any experience of the 1.9 Scholar EVO 2 engine.

My engine is with them at the moment (don't ask) and there is an option to go to 1.9. They reckon its a big improvement over the 1.8, but it's an extra 650 quid... That's with nothing else done, VVC head (existing) standard air, Lotus Sports exhaust, standard ECU...

I had been planning to just get the block sorted by them but rebuilt as standard.

I've heard conflicting reports - if you get a good one, it's awesome (bear in mind it'll have forged pistons and they do have a lifespan - ask them what it is)

They sure the standard ECU will run it okay?

I'd only do it as a precursor to going mega on the engine - otherwise it'll be some nice extra torque (if the ECU copes) with lifed pistons going into it.

Makes no sense as far as I can tell on an otherwise standard engine. I would be very surprised if the ECU will cope well. It may cope but I wouldn't expect the engine to be running as it should. Forged pistons will last ~ 30k miles in that I would have thought so something else to consider.

Money would be better spent elsewhere IMHO.

Thanks both of you. Will stick to plan C... (plan A having been passed a long time ago).

I have got a Lotus, I'm sure I have.

My newly acquired Caterham has an EVO 2 1900cc block, but its early days so I am not in a position to comment, but as others who are far more versed in engine tuning have already said, I wouldnt bother if there are no other mods being made to take advantage of the extra 100cc.

Mine was carried out in addition to some other tuning, Emerald, Pistal pistons, R500 Cams etc etc.

My limited research showed that for every great experience of scholar there were other bad ones.

Pointless exercise unless you are going to bolt on a modified head, cams and throttle bodies and the like. As mentioned varied results with this block, get a good one and the sky's the limit but get a bad one and a world of pain awaits. QC at scholar seems a bit hit and miss. And the EVO 4 block isn't much better.
