Brake Pad replacement

Post by Doc883 » Wed Apr 29, 2009 2:18 pm

What's the consensus of opinion with changing brake pads on an S2 Elise. I am looking at the Pagid RS42 for a combination of road/track but was wondering can I just change the fronts or is it wise to do both front and rear at the same time ? Standard Lotus pads at the minute with standard drilled discs.

The standard Lotus pads are not very good , I would change the lot . Keep your old pads you never know you may want to trade the car in some day .

I poped mintex 1144 on mine which is an S1 111s. Seemed to be good value for money for mainly road use and can handle the odd track day at my pace. I wouldnt know which would be best for the S2 but I would say your decision will be based on really how much do you want to spend and will your car be used mainly for track or on the road? Obviously the pad that works well on track isnt the same one that works well on the road so if you have a bit more details it may help with a better response :thumbsup

42's will be your best bet and I'd do all 4 corners so as not to ruin the balance under braking. I run 14's which are overkill for my needs but great on track although squeeky on the road, doesn't bother me at all. I have been out on track with Mass in his Club racer on 42's and the brakes were really strong with no fade but I think with all the track miles Mass racks up he was going through a few sets a aeason and they're not cheap... A few folk use the new yellow stuff pads and they were raving about them on seloc a while back but I've not heard any propper reviews about road and track performance a search on seloc may show something about this though, not sure if Phil has them on his exige and Gorrie had them on his S2 but I've not heard how he got on...

All the best

Mark :thumbsup

I tried yellows recently, better than greens and reds, but not up with the big boys.

I'd say the Yellow R's are to be compared with Mintex 1144... don't go comparing to Pagids. As tut says, they're not big boys pads.
I like them though.. for the price.

Different strokes for different folks I'm afraid.

After allllllllllllllll the brake threads that I've read it really does come down to personal taste IMHO..

I just took my Mintex 1144's off. Hated them... And I was out in someones Elise the other day that had the Yellow EBC's on them - he hates them.. And I didn't like them much either. On the other hand I love the reds, but as above Tut and others think the yellows are better. And I've been reading a thread on PH about someone who hates both Red and Yellows but swears by Greens

Saying all that Pagids seem to get the go ahead from most people - but again, from what I've read, they sound a bit too much for road driving. And most people, like Mark, say they squeek when cold and personally that would drive me mad.

I've just gone back to greenstuff. Just can justify the additional cost of Pagids on what is now a road focused car.

I moved from Greenstuff to Mintex on the S1. I preferred the mintex as they were less wooden from cold. For my tame driving and limited trackdays per year I can't justify the additional costs of the pagids also, both the mintex and greenstuffs provided me with all the braking power and feel I needed for track driving. Obviously the faster guys can probably make better use of the additional performance of the pagids - not quite sure how that performance is quantified though.

I think my exige has standard pads on it and I intend to replace them with mintex when the time comes.
