I've got oil coming out of the right hand corner of the engine (not very technical I'm afraid). I've only ever had 2 oil leaks before and both ended up costing thousands to put right. So my question is... are oil eaks always REALLY bad news or can it sometimes be something trivial?

Seriously:

Oil filter and/or sump drain plug washer are cheapest to fix (and most expensive if they fail completely - you'll run out of oil in seconds at high RPM).

Non-VVC Oil leaks from the gearbox end camshaft oil seals are cheapest as these can be whipped out and replaced without stripping much else off (just the top engine cover and whatever is bolted to gearbox end of the head - depends on model).

The sump seal, oil filter take off and cam cover gasket should be moderately cheap to fix as these are pretty much bolt off, clean, replace, bolt on.

Oil leaks from the drivers side camshaft oil seals are more expensive (similar to timing belt change as you have to strip off timing belt and cam pulleys to access seals).

Cam ladder seal unusual place to leak, but would be slightly more expensive than the above camshaft oil seals as you also have to split the cam ladder from the head, clean and then refit; you then have to replace all four camshaft oil seals.

Head gasket would be very expensive (but not that likely I think).

Front crankshaft oil seal is going to be quite expensive (strip off the timing gear, lower engine off mount to be able to get to the bloody oil seal in the firs tplace).

Rear crankshaft oil seal is going to be most expensive - engine out (or gearbox out). You would replace the clutch at the same time, and you should replace the flywheel bolts too.

Take your pick ...
