Oil from Crankshaft pulley

Post by Stumpy Nugget » Tue May 12, 2009 7:37 pm

I am getting oil (quite a lot) dropping from behind the Crankshaft pulley. I guess this can only be my Crankshaft front seal that is away.. Anyone know of a place near glasgow that does this sort of thing? Also anyone know what cost I am look at? Doubt my AA cover will help out here? Pants! Just as the sun started to shine

The oil pump lives behind the pulley, so if there's a lot of oil escaping it may be the culprit rather than just a crankshaft oil seal... I'd be guessing at costs, but a rough guess would be the cost of a timing belt change + a bit extra labor + parts...

Dont know of a garage in Glasgow that i would trust, but i'm sure others can help out here... SLS in Edinburgh would get the job done though :thumbsup

The plot thickens...

Firstly the oil my sump is perfectly clear. However, the oil that dropping is black (treacle)??? also the area where it is dropping from appears to be below the pully. However  the cam belt is dry, the pulley is dry, no obviousl spray on the engine coming from oil hitting the pulley? Now for the weird bit. There is a lot of oil on the engine mount (which is higher than the leak)??? Weird or what?

So, any detectives out there who would know why my engine in general is not covered in oil but there is oil on the floor and oil on engine mount? Also why the oil is black and not clear like the oil in the sump? I am stuck:shock:

The main engine mount is filled with fluid . Could it be your mount has failed? I have not seen one leaking but would imagine that could be the culprit .

You learn something new everyday... I like the sound of a £60 engine mount instead of a front crankshaft seal... cheers.. :P the investigation continues.

Thanks for the tip on the "hydro Mount". I changed it out yesterday and it seems the oil leak has stopped, so it looks like the RH engine mount was the problem. I would never have known that the engine mount came with oil in it. The old one still had the Rover stamp on it...

Anyway, top tip for removing the RH engine mount. I did this by slackening the two main retaining bolts on the mount to the engine, trolley jack under the sump with a bit of wood to take the weight. Removed the wheel and liner, removed the whole assembly (please note the chassis bolts will spin and you need spanners top and bottom to get them off, a third elbow here would help access :P ). Once the whole assembly is removed it is two mins to swap out and put back in.

You have to take the whole assemble out as there is not enough clearance to simply lift the engine and remove the engine mount. Bummer!

So thanks again for the advice... :thumbsup
