MOT failure

Post by campbell » Wed Jun 17, 2009 12:09 pm

For number plate.

I have a bike-sized front plate, correct font, spacing & proportions etc. Passed for 3 or 4 years previously. But the tester tells me our beloved Government issued massively tighter regs to all MOT stations in March, driven by the Police, detailing the very specific mm sizings, spacings etc etc. Even the wrong colour of fixing bolt cap can be failed. All down to the ANPR camera constraints of course.

Now before I get flamed, my point is not outrage at being failed. It's a fair cop and frankly I am relieved that nothing more expensive had gone pop! Instead, it's to pass the info to others to be aware of. The main outcome for me was to present with the original plinth and plate, at which point the car was passed and all is well. Regent Motors Linlithgow, very helpful and professional.

I may well have to refit the original plate and plinth going forward, but if I do, I better cart around the small one in the boot just in case. I guarantee at the first speedbump (and f*ck me those things are breeding faster than swine flu) I will lose the big one (again) and be even more likely to get tugged. Sheesh.

Yup - I recently re-fitted my front plate (well, got a new one) and it's cracked and mullered already.

Mentioned it to a plod when he pulled me for no plate once and he told me I should approach the bumps slower - what, the front of my car levitates at walking pace does it? As long as councils ignore their own guidelines about speedbump height, I'll keep this plate (tattered as it is) hanging off the front as proof to el ploddo.

East Ayrshire have tested all there speedbumps after I put a complaint in and they tell me thay are all within the guidelines, I havn't checked this yet as I would have to make a template up, I have a claim to put in against Stirling council as one of there's (near the old jail) has just been granted Munro Status

That's nice, but I try to avoid E Ayrshire when at all possible :thumbsup

Most of my hits have been in the Weej and coming out of my own fecking drive into the hugely cambered main road.

I have put my smashed one back on with washers, again after a speed hump knock off. No doubt it is not acceptable, but I am showing one.

Funnily enough it used to get knocked off before I went down South, but now by necessity that I am a law abiding citizen I have nothing to fear.

Of course, its a mechanical component that could affect the safety of your car.

Forgot to put my damaged one back on when John did the MOT so he had to put a new one on. Keeping that in the garage now for future MOT's.

I guess it depends on your choice of MOT Station ;-)

In my case it's more to do with the traffics that cruise up and down outside the house (it's the main road between Prestwick and Ayr) and started to pull me every time they saw me without a plate.

Got a bit tired after the third time and the third producer.

I had to take my wife to a housing estate in Gorebridge at the weekend.
Once off the main road, I managed to ground the RX8 on those stupid bumps that are just mounds in the middle of the lane...... SIX TIMES  (some sounded horrible)
I'd hate to live there with an Elise.

The purpose built ones that go all the way across the road & are about 1-2 yards in length are fine... they slow the traffic... I can live with them.

The ones I oppose are like squares in the middle of the lane, looks like the council got the local pikey with some spare asphalt from a driveway job to slapdown. I'm sure they must knacker your geo over time, and also have ruts in them so the middle part is even more severe... they should be banned. At least the purpose built ones have more chance of being a common elevation, I can't see how installation of the pikey ones can be controlled for height/angle.
I have no signature.

They are called "speed cushions" and the rubber ones cost £2500 a pair. They are for the benefit of bus passengers, especially those who are standing. it gives them a more comfortable ride.
