Gearbox rebuild and upgrade parts

Post by ABZ-Elise » Wed Jun 24, 2009 10:23 am

After reading shugs thread on rebuilding his gearbox I've decided to rebuild my C/R gearbox before I put it in my car. The chances are there is nothing wrong with the box but I never got to test it out before it was removed from the last car it was in and I know it has had a fair amount of track use, plus it will be getting more track use in my car. All I really want to do is change to steal caged bearings and replace any other bit that might be a bit worse for wear after its previous track use. I don't want to put the gearbox in my car only to find I have to pull it out again because it sounds like a bag of spanners, might as well just give it a once over before it goes in.

Anyone know of anywhere to get parts from?

Cheers,
Kev.

Mine was a lucky find on fleabay - although you can get full caged bearking kits on the bay - not massively cheap, but they are cheaper than buying them singly.

Search PG1 steel caged, or uprated bearing kit

Also, dunno if the link was posted in my thread to the page where I found the rebuild diary on the Rover forum - extremely useful.

 £299.99 for the uprated kit on ebay. It also says that some of the bearings are no longer available.

Eh? I saw them for the £80 bracket.

Sorry I can't be more help, but I cheated and got a box that had recently been upgraded with the right bearings - just needed FD changed.

Perhaps worth digging through that Rover forum thread, in case it's got further information on stockists.

I bet the bearings are standard off the shelf items. Just need to ident them properly.

Just checked that fleabay listing BTW - exactly the same listing that was something like £79.99 when I was rebuilding my box. Blatant profiteering.

There are really only three bearings that need changed to steel caged for ultimate spec IIRC - 2x diff and 1x layshaft.

Kev,
pull the box apart, pop out the bearings and get the numbers off them or take them with you and go to Aberdeen bearings or any bearing supplier for that matter. They will be able to match the size OD/ID and in any spec you want, ie metal caged, sealed etc etc.
Link is in shugs thread BTW but you need to register to see it, well worth it.

I've registered on that site, its a good read and full of helpful info.

Yeah I think you're right about sourcing my own bearings £299.99 is a bit much to pay I think. I'd rather just put the gearbox in and hope for the best if I couldn't do it cheaper than that. I just want to get the gearbox ready for duratec power.

Found a set of 4 metal caged bearings from moto-build for £109.

Either here or here. Second ones are in the Rover turbo section.
