VHPD recuced rev limit

Post by r10crw » Mon Jul 06, 2009 11:25 am

Continuing on from the thread in general Ive got some questions you will all be able to help me out with...
So last night my lmiter was reduced to 5.5K however this was after the speedo had been playing funny buggers. Now on my S1 the L pick up only fed the speedo but I do rememeber reading that on the exige with the vhpds the ecu also had a speed input and there were two of them? If the ecu does not get a stable reading from the pick up will it reduce the rpm limit just the same as a stationary limiter? Ill try cleaning the pickup first might just need the face cleaned.
Was the 190 ecu mapped without a CAT, Ive got the cat on just now and the motor feels a little restricted higher up, Im gonna remove the cat tonight anyway and see what happens, just be nice to know if shes gonna run a little lean.
Scotty whats the button at the top of the center coloum for? I could get it to do anything last night, thought it was for the fogs but they work whatever.
Cheers Craig.

Craig cant help with your main issue, but the top button on the centre console resets the mileage trip.

Also note that the two power sockets only provide power at more than 2000rpm. (just incase you think they are broken).

back left hub houses speedo sensor, back right hub houses wheel speed sensor for the ECU. Could well be both playing up tbh, mine kept coming loose due to a stripped thread, others play up because they are dirty.

The 5500 rev limit is common on VHPD's and can be caused by a number of issues. The common one being the wheel speed sensor which picks up from the right reaer wheeel, this can become dirty, loose or just be shagged. The cable from the sensor can also be damaged both under the car or where it passes through through the bulkhead into the cabin where it rubs and can become fraid. The engine is limitted to 5500 when the ecu detects a misfire so other areas to look for are leaking vacum pipes, HT leads, spark plugs etc. It can be a long and expensive issue to resolve as i well know as I have replaced much of the above and still get it occasionally on track. For further information I would recomend you head over to exiges.com and perform a search, you will find plenty of threads and info on this issue.

So again thanks for the reply guys, finally got round to checking the sensor today. So cleaned the sensor and no difference. Incidentally the 340 only uses one sensor on the nearside and must share the signal between ECU and dash. The unit receives 5 volts on one wire with the other being used for the signal. Scoped this wire and nothing except for some noise. Stole a sensor from my mates car and everything is working fine so definitely the sensor. Can anyone tell me what these sensors are from? its surely not lotus specific?

Tut, the sensor may not be the same as the Elise one ...

Craig:

I was under the impression that these were VR (Variable Reluctance) sensors like the crank position sensor. These would not be fed 5V as they generate an AC voltage a bit like a dynamo.

If you're sure about the 5V then it may be a hall effect sensor fitted to your car.

Anyway, I guess you'll be able to tell by looking at Tut's spare sensor - it'll be pretty obvious.

Cheers,
Robin

Hi Robin, def 5v dc feed (on the orange wire) referneced to the vehicle ground and also magnetic so you would think HE transducer however VR would more suitable for the temps beside the disc. Its the same as the one used on the early s1 with alloy hubs because thats what I stole it from :D Once I fitted the new one I just started the car in gear and the speedo worked so just put it back together, if Id been thinking I would have scoped the ouput but new car and all I couldnt wait
