Suspension

Post by danny » Wed Jul 15, 2009 8:12 pm

Hi everyone, I am looking for new shocks and springs for my s1 Elise, and I am wondering what the people in the know are using and would advise. I am not bothered about lowering just performance.
Cheers Danny

Apparently Hoffmann spec Nitrons are the future, pricey but said to be worth every penny, John (Victor Meldrew) has them so he'd be the best men to talk to about them.

Too extreme for what you want, the steve butts S2 bilsien kit is the one to go for. Std ride height.

Dont go anywhere near the Ebay £300 "Gaz" type kits.. they have far too much lag in the damper response and the car will feel wobbly and stiff all at the same time compared to the bilstien kit which is defo the best set up for a road car...
Well it moves... might as well make the most of it....

You will need to trawl SELOC for that, search for Steve Butts, thats how I got in touch with him.

The S2 kit that he does (i.e. S2 lotus spec dampers sized to fit an S1) were about £550 all in when I got mine a few years back. Best investment you can get for a std S1 with old worn shocks. They are more expensive than some option you get from Ebay but they are so worth it.

No doubt other will be along soon to agree..

I thought Hoffmann would valve them dependant on your needs/use of car? :?

Yep, but at £1300 a set, you get a much more cost effective set up with S2 style Bilstiens for about £550.

Cant justify the extra cost for a road car.. IMHO

(Oh my god, I've just used IMHO for the first and second time ever.. ..)

Silly question, perhaps, but in what sense do you feel the current dampers aren't performing well?

Have to agree with the above.

I replaced my Shocks and Springs on my S1 but couldn't justify (afford) the nitrons. I got the Bilstein KIt from Elise Parts for £550 including the brackets but have a look around as i believe there is a company doing them for £450 ??.

Cheers

It's bell and coville that do them for £450 and I think Chris Neil also do it but they're on back oredr at Lotus and have been for some time now. There are a couple of used sets on E-bay, seloc and Pistonheads at between £250 and £275.

Hope that helps

Mark :)
