A048's / R888

Post by ClarkyBoy » Thu Jul 16, 2009 5:14 pm

Hi Guys,

Whats best for me?

My S2 only gets used at weekends/nice days and SE runs/trackdays, so im not worried about the tyres being any use in poor weather,

Also anyone know where i would be best to get these for the best price (come one im from aberdeenshire!)

Help and advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Clark

If you want to use an R tyre then Ronnies prices are unbeatable for the 48R's. I have just posted the prices on the Knockhill thread.

If you're sticking R tyres on it will you not have to do other things too like upgrade your toe links?

Yep if he is going to track it, virtually essential.

Change your old brake fluid if you have not done so yet, I think 4.1 is the recommended.
Decent brake pads.
Upgraded rear toe links.

I would think that should do.

Tut, I think that the toe links on the S2 should be OK as standard for the R tyres - but just check that they are in good condition. I've had several sets on my car without issue. Was a concern on the S1 AFAIK??

What wheels do you have? The A048's will go on the standard S2 front J5.5 rim, but its at the limit of what is recommended for the M and MH compounds. If you can invest in a set of J6 or J7 fronts, you'll get more out the tyres. Either way, I'd also be looking for a geo setup too... A bit more -ve camber at the front is what's called for, possibly coupled with a slight increase at the rear too, to balance things up :thumbsup

Ask Mc Ape about the toelinks...
Best to upgrade them.

What suspension is on the car? If it's standard it will be too soft for R rated tyres.
Better to upgrade the suspension and tweak the geo first...then think about more tyre grip.

Even on the S2 Ali?? I thought they were Ok? :scratch

Just found this too :?

That was also the advice I got from Lotus Motorsport - of course it doesn't cover ALL driving styles :D

I'm still on the original set of toe links and have done a fair bit of track mileage on 48's

They are better than the S1 but still break.
My original S2 Exige had upgraded rear toelinks as part of the Performance Pack...

Depends on your driving style I guess. Personally I would upgrade.

I know that exiges could be specced to have a single bar from wheel to wheel - I had discussed taking the elise down to hethel to have the same thing fitted to mine too.

But I gave up trying to turn it into something it's not and bought the 7 instead.

Personally, i'd run the eliseparts uniball toe link, and change the bolts every year

As for driving style tut would probably be the best person to judge, as he has now spent 6-700 miles directly infront/behind me lately, my s2 is on standards racetech suspension(dont know if the racetech has different sus?) but its bilstiens, and tut reckons my car is more stable than his on the road (as he discovered whilst leaving the ground on the 050709 trip  ) and he runs nitron's,

Decent brake pads.
i will get my brakes completely worked over - fluid+pads replaced, calipers cleaned up slides copper greased etc. when i get back from london at the end of the month.
