inside of front disks rusting

Speaking to Si and others the inside pads wear faster generally. Having a slight rubbing noise I decided to check mine and found that both pads are wearing evenly and that the inside of the front disks are rusting and slightly pitted. (not too badly though).
I have taken the inside pad out and the pot seems to be moving fine. I have pumped it back and forth a couple of times to free it of just in case.

Anyone got any ideas as to why the insides are not clearing as well as the outsides?
I ran the car through the winter.
The disks and pads were fitted new as a set last spring.
I'm going to cross post.

I am having exactly the same problem FYI...

On all four wheels..

I have ebc crossdrilled discs & green stuff pads & have found that while the discs all look perfect from the outside of the car the inner surface is slightly glazed & rusty.

like you inside pistons seem nice & free & rear slides seem fine. Am going to try emery on them & will see how that goes.

I have the same setup ebc groved and dimpled and greenstuffs although I can't see how the pads or disks could be the problem.

The rears on mine are fine, nice, smooth and shiney both sides.
The fronts have some scoring on the inside too FYI.
Are your's cross drilled or dimpled?

cross drilled, not dimpled & not grooved.

Not 100% sure that they are ebc tho. my car is is a 99 111s & I think I remember reading that they may have come as standard with drilled discs.

Thing is that rears have a 3mm spacers fitted between the disc and the hub which reeks of after market....ie ebc or similar & the spacer being fitted due to slightly different offset on the disc.

I don't know if there are similar spacers on the front (but I don't think so).

I wonder if it could just be that the discs are more prone to contamination on the inside cos of poored airflow around the backplates & possibly more crud/grit/sh1te bouncing off the inside of the wheel arch???????????????

What is the official line on the backplates....are they just to avoid stones/grit getting in or do they actually aid cooling?

They rusted away on an old rover SD1 I had & I didn't notice the difference.

So all of you guys have still the shield?

Could correlate. What if they were making the inside pad rn hotter?
I have never had the issue of insides wearing faster than outside but I removed my shields a long time ago (still, come to think of it, I didn't have the problem even when they were installed)

They are there not for cooling, but to avoid dirt from getting to the disc.

I have forced cooling in mine (ducting+bell)

Junks on seloc came up with the possibility that it may be due to the pad retaining pins not being greased. This could cause the pads to rotate rather than slide???

I'd be careful with grease that close to pads, could be messy. Prolly better off polishing the bar instead, mine are pretty crusty!
