Discs at Service limit

Post by gdr » Wed Jul 22, 2009 9:02 am

After Monday, front discs now officially below the 24.9mm service limit (24.8 mm). Still got 5 or 6mm on the pads, so appears to be that the RS14s are made out of the same stuff that grinding wheels are made of. This is the performance pack AP big brakes (fronts discs with separate bells and rotors).
Does this require an immediate change of rotors, or at least a change before next TD which for me is SIDC on 8th Aug? I'm sure I read somewhere that the disc was OK to 24.0. Certainly no braking problems whatsoever at KH on Monday (although I was being fairly gentle on them as I was staying out a long time on dry track).

Also, when I do invest in new front rotors any viable options to the AP drilled rotors it came with out of the box? The drilled holes do tend to plug with dust very frequently and when quite new they were grinding a bit (although been fine for last year so I guess this must have been a bedding in issue).

Not sure about the service limit but I changed to the grooved rotors as I was getting surface cracking around the holes on the drilled ones. Grooved ones have been fine but had severe pad pickup (had to be skimmed) after poor bedding in before Anglesey.

My old drilled ones have been skimmed and are in the garage if you're stuck.

As Ali says, if you do replace disks you are better off with just grooved ones. Probably others as well, but both the Ape and I have ended up with cracked disks that started from the holes.

OK thanks, will investigate grooved rotors - I had heard about the cracking around holes but no sign of this on mine, I guess I'm not working them hard enough.
