Mexi-Tyres

Post by GregR » Tue May 30, 2006 1:36 pm

I am down to 3mm on my front Bridgestones, with plenty treadon my T1-Rs. I kept my 4mm rear bridgestones after fitting the Toyos. With the impending MT, do I:-

(a) put on the old rear bridgestones, and drive to & from KH v close to the legal limit but with nice well worn-in rubber; or

(b) buy new T1-Rs for the front, and have a front tyre with more tread than the rear.

My concerns with each scenario are:-

(a) 6 points (at least!) if the old bill are out on the 9/6

(b) Toyos are squidgy for the 1st 500 miles, do I want to be hammering round KH on squidgy boots?

Comments, and opinions appreciated!

Ta,

Greg :D

kind offer Sanj, but having heard what I've heard about the p0s, I'd be better putting soap on my rims and turning up to KH like that ;)

Ah no - not if it's dry. They are still a good dry weather tyre (if they are new and not perished)

It's only if the rain comes down that the grip vanishes.

Andy and a few others have said T1-r's are a bit horrible and wouldn't buy them again.  (I'm on P0's so i can't talk).

Horses for courses though. T-1R's are absolutely bloody fine for 99% of Elise driving. It's only when you overheat them that they get iffy (once over the initial bedding in period) Also, the 'squirmy' period isn't as horrible as folk make out - I ran the T-1S and they were worse than the R's.

If thay ain't good enough - spunk the extra money on Advans, but you'll be doing well to justify the extra cost unless you're chasing 60s laps at KH (therefore cooking them)

3mm? Isn't the legal limit 1.6mm? How much are you likely to wear off in a session?

They are similar, so I don't see a huge issue. Good thing is you'll be able to find out what they are like on track before going onto the road.

Front is likely to feel a bit vague as the new ones bed in. When they are all bedded, you are slightly more likely to have a livlier rear end, but I honestly think that you're talking grades of feel that you won't be pushing on the road (unless you're daft!)
