Current Recomendations for S1 Headlamp bulb upgrades

Post by jamiey » Wed Aug 05, 2009 1:46 pm

Hi All,

Liz could do with some work on her prior to Winter (and birth of Series 1 Sprog in December).

One of the things on my list is to replace the rusty lamps.

I'm a little confused by all the choice on Eliseparts for bulb upgrades so was wondering what your current recommendations are for MOT compliant bulbs...?

Also how many will I need (I'm a bit dim.. :? ), will I need main & dip bulbs?

Cheers & Ta in Advance

Standard Elise S1 has 4 bulbs in the headlights. I reckon each side has 1x H4 (big halogen bulb for dipped beam and full beam) and a smaller sidelight bulb.

If you haven't already bought them, you can get the lights (without bulbs) from a local motor factors rather than eliseparts, and they are nearly 1/2 the price!

Search on here for headlight threads to get a model number / if I remember i'll look at the box mine come in.

The boxes are a different brand to the light, but it's just because the company that makes the lights was bought over, and the light units are completely identical (can't remember exactly, but cibie, nut now come in a lucas box or similar).

Fitting them isn't too bad though you have to jack the front and remove the wheel. Then just pull back the arch liner, and there is 3 nylon wingnuts at the 9, 3 and 6 o'clock positions. Then you remove the connector from the back of the big H4 bulb and 1/4 twist the sidelight out.
I also put a little bit of copper grease on to aid refitment, then removal again as I fitted them squint!

Once the units are out, 2 or 3 screws out of the holding ring, then fit to the new light.
Look at the positioning of the 3 holds compared to the old light so you get the new one in straight
Don't do what I did and assume the lugs on the light are in the right place, then fit the lights, then wonder why they look squint!
