Source for shock bolts and nuts?

Post by kevham » Wed Aug 12, 2009 10:18 pm

I've had my VX thoroughly serviced and checked out now and my front left damper is leaking. You can feel it under braking - the car skips to the left then right before settling into the braking proper.
I had a feeling the shocks were on the way out so I bought a set of secondhand spring/damper units from a VXR to see me through until I get proper race dampers. I understand that its easy to replace the units (two bolts) but I wondered if there was a good source of the bolts, nylocs and washers as I'd feel better replacing these when I change the shocks over. Where do you guys buy your nuts and bolts?

Cheers,

Kev

Bell & Colvill stock the Lotus ones, you could go to your local Vauxhall dealer they would be able to supply the correct ones.

After Mikes advice I am getting a complete bolt refresh kit from Yvo which includes the damper bolts, but I also need all the wishbone bolts, so at 26 pieces it is probably over the top for you.

Excuse my ignorance, tut but what is Yvo?

Suspension refresh is one of my potential winter projects but I need to change the dampers to keep me safe until them (I've foolishly entered the VX at Forrestburn at the end of the month).

Kev, assuming the VX is the same as the elise S1 then these are the bolts you need from Bell & Colvill. The two longer ones are for the top front mounts, the ones with the top hats.

They have a good reputation but some of their prices are eye watering.

S1 headlight covers at £160, I paid £35, rear toe link set £650.

I'm pretty sure they'll be be the same - I notice they fit S1, S2 and all Exige models. For £17 there's one way to find out.........

£17 for 8 nuts and bolts!!!

Why not just go to a local fastener distributor and pick them up for pennies. They're not exactly anything special. Just standard metric nuts and bolts.

bolts cost pence if you buy them in any sort of bulk even a small box of them is relativly cheap. you need to find someone who is willing to split a box and sell individual screws.

Or you could buy boxes of the sizes you need and flog them for 20p each and still make a killing

Quite. But who is that person who will split them and if i have to spend more than 15 minutes finding this person, I'd be better off being fleeced by Bell & Colvill. Time is money.......

BTW, Autovaux quoted me £92 ! It's a crazy world. I'm off to have some beer... :cheers

If anyone is looking for anything (small or large quantities) then just give me a shout. We'll send them in the post as well if you're not local.

Gary, I have decided to go local as Yvo's work out at £40 with postage. If I send you a list would you be able to do them for me?

All M10 HT 8.8 from 55mm to 130mm x 24. Ian or Clare could pick them up.

Cheers
