I am sure this is a dumb question but can someone confirm whether the piston outer seal on the brembo rear brake caliper is a simple dust seal or does this have some form of job to stop leakages of fluid etc? The reason for asking is that from the photo below you can see that mine is completely gubbed and I need to know whether this means that i should even attempt to drive the car without changing the seal or should I do it immediately. The logic being that if its for dust only then I can drive the car this weekend. If not then I need to park it up and get the seal kit ordered...
Any help appreciated. Cheers.

Main seal is inside the caliper body. You need to remove the piston to change the main one but might be able to pull the old dust cover off and fit the new one without pulling the piston although the piston does hold the seal in place (see drawing).

Re: Brembo Brake Seal
These aren't exactly easy to replace, Re build mine a few months back.
The piston is held in with a spring clip which takes a bit of force to get out. Once you have done that and the new seal is fitted you have to press the piston in until you hear the clip snap into place. try it with a g clamp but i needed a Hyd Press.
Best of Luck

Re: Brembo Brake Seal
If it's just the seal then buy the kit and replace the seal.
Ideally you'd strip it and do a full rebuild, but if behind the seal is dry and clean....
