So is my alternator on the way out or is it something else?

When the lights are on the temp indicator on the dash shows 110 deg. When the lights are off it reads correctly.

So is it the alternator or some thing else?

Sounds like a bad earth from Engine/Gearbox to Chassis. Make sure the earth strap is in good condition and there is no corrotion on any of the threads. You could also run a jump cable from Engine to Chassis or Negative battery terminal to check.

There was a thread not that long ago about someone having the very same problem, there was a good explanation on why it happens.

Cheers
Alan

P.S Hows the new Engine ?

I have it on N1 and N3, lights on full and fan can take it above 115, but just ignore it now. Craig ran an earth cable from the battery through the central tunnel to an engine mount to cure another problem, but it made no difference to the temp gauge rise with load.

I believe the sensor uses the ecu earth (pin in rear boot panel) not the engine so issue could be between Battery negetive and where it connects to the chassis rail in front compartment.
Cheers Craig.
