I need to set up the tracking and chamber on the golf
Now i am not going to actually spend any money on this so any idea on how to set up the geo using fishing line, square bar and axle stands?

Give the wheels a good kick to straighten them which will be good enough for a Golf.

Have setup at my garage, done it a few times now.
Alan also has a camber gauge handy...
It's easier to show than explain...think we're doing a geo tomorrow, you're welcome to come along.

Yes, me and Ali have geo'd my car every week since its been re-built. Quite the experts at the pikey geo.
We used 4 axle stands, fishing line, a ruler and on one occasion a ginger bloke.

I do have a camber guage you can borrow but its not mine so would need to be returned fairly quickly.
Just fitted a new set of nitrons, so will be at Ali's for another geo tomorrow night.

Doddle, in fact probably a doddle by eye . . .a wise man taught me to do a geo using an inclinometer for camber and your eyes for toe . . . takes 10 minutes . . . been good enough for said wise man and me for a few years . . .

. . . shame I'm not more locale . . .

this, this forum is the place for you to find the info you're after anyway.
Out of interest, I assume you can only do geo if your floor is perfectly flat? If not, how to do you go about providing a flat surface to work from?

Within reason you can remove any non flatness of the floor from measurements using some simple maths . . . obviously if the car is rolled over 20 degrees the suspension will not be sitting is it's at rest position however in reality this isn't an issue within a a fair few degrees of flat . . . It's far more important to ensure the car is correctly weighted before setting it up . . . I use a digital inclinometer for camber rather than string, it's faster and much less hassle, you can also use a spirit level and vernier slide for the same purpose . . . toe I usually do by eye referencing the other wheel on the same side of the car, this ensures the toe settings are relative to the real car centerline rather than one you have to try to guess using the string thing . . . not that that's too difficult . . . means side to side toe is equal and the car does in a straight line . . .
