Gearbox oil weep
Gearbox oil weep
Is it normal to get a very small oil leak from the gearbox ? Last time I did an oil change the undertray was stained under the selector shaft which I cleaned up . Doing an oil change again and its stained again. I topped up the gearbox oil ( easier said than done )just in case but it appeard fine. More oil went up my arm than in the box and it over flowed ok.
It could be leaking from a number of places - probably worth checking the driveshaft seals and the selector shaft boot (I guess there's some sort of seal on that too).
The gearbox is filled for life so I wouldn't expect any leak at all. I do remember that sometimes the boxes were overfilled a tad and when you got them really hot they spewed out through the breather, but that would be the top side of the box.
Cheers,
Robin

Mmmmm today is the first time I checked it . Oil spilled out when I took the plug off but I thought that may be due to the jacking position . Its only done 9k miles so may have been overfilled at the factory .Drive shaft are ok . I will investigate tomorrow.robin wrote:It could be leaking from a number of places - probably worth checking the driveshaft seals and the selector shaft boot (I guess there's some sort of seal on that too).

ScottD had a leak from the selector shaft. Just popped the seal back in IIRC. I had a driveshaft leak, pig to change the seal as the driveshaft has to come out.
You sure it's gearbox? Apparently the best way to fill the bugger is thru the speedo drive hole blank (Metro box remember!) take out the fill level plug and top up until it spills. I'm going to try this soon to check my level is still ok.

That would have been really easy doing it that wayRICHARDHUMBLE wrote:ScottD had a leak from the selector shaft. Just popped the seal back in IIRC. I had a driveshaft leak, pig to change the seal as the driveshaft has to come out.

Cheers 10k but I was expecting to loose more when I did my seal, I have a spare (£11.99 FFS!) bottle of 'box oil. Castrol SMS-X or something. I'll use that.
BTW I didn't find out about the speedo shaft thing till after I did mine either, hence the mess of oil so I can't see if it's still leaking
I only got a bit into my 'box, it was still mostly full, but feck me does it run quietly. Sounded like a washing machine full of scrap metal on overrun before, now it just quietly whines to itself.

Something like that, for those that don't know:
"When it stops leaking it's run out"
And
"We just have to top up the no loss hydraulic system before you fly"
The aircrew always like that
