Brake discs

Post by whaleys » Mon Mar 15, 2010 11:37 am

Does anyone have any experience of Kinetix brake discs? Was looking at these...

I wouldn't be using them for track days, any thoughts?

Oh and any thoughts on the red stuff pads? Again unlikely to be used for track days. I liked the sound of them because they seem to get quite good reviews and they are supposed to cause minimal amounts of dust.

Again, thoughts welcome :)

I'd avoid ebay cheapos on brakes, TBH. Redstuffs are too hard for the Elise - if you want EBCs, then Greenstuffs are the ones (work fine on the road, although people slate them - they do differ in feel from hot to cold though) Bit more cash and you've got Mintex 1144 which are excellent road pads (and work well on track)

PM StuP on here about good brake discs - again, I wouldn't skimp on no-name eBay cheapos (that aren't that cheap, looking at them)

Lots of positive experience with these combos.

Cheers Shug, I've had a quick search for StuP on the members list and can't find him.

Was that his username?

Mintex 1144 and Stu-special discs here - you need pad buffers as the grooves can rattle the pads and the pads occasionally squeak but a deft stab of brakes shuts them up.
As for stopping the car - a Rangerover helped me test them last weekend - no complaints here!

I'm also running Stu's discs and have no complaints, none of the gravely feel of cross drilled and nice long groves make them progressive.. Stu is Stu160 on here if anyone is looking for a decent brake disc... Does some other bits and bobs under the name of Muttsnuts motorsport :thumbsup

Was just about to say stay away from any EBC pads, even though I use their discs on the front, but there is a big difference between a standard Elise and mine. As Shug says, greens do work for many people, I have tried them all, yellows were the best, but lasted about as long as a SELOC members orgasm.

With an upgraded car, you normally end up with Padgids if you want real braking, though I still use MMC's all round on N1 and on the rear with N3. There are also the new breed, Carbotech's etc at similar prices. At the £50 mark,I would go for Mintex.

I've ran nothing but EBC REDSTUFF on my Exige (S2) and I absolutely love them. Won't use anything else now.

I wrote a review about them a while ago when I got them - compared to the Mintex 1144 and Greenstuffs that I tried before the difference is night and day! Mintex sh@t brake dust everywhere although felt okay and Greenstuffs scared me so much I took them off after a month, even after I scrubbed them in

Redstuff feels great even straight from cold and has super bite when you really push them - oh and next to no brake dust! And when you get brake dust it isn't brown and crap it's greyish and wipes off nice and easy.

Lot's of people have opinions on things they haven't tried, however all of this is from experience so hopefully helpful. Don't listen to any one person though - usually professional reviews off the internet are best as everyone is different :thumbsup

I've got a set of Carbone Lorraine pads waiting to go on. Probably need new discs too so was thinking about the EP Alu Belled ones. Been running Greenstuff up until now but even I can get brake fade with them

For road use I wouldnt use the Greenstuff, but the Mintex 1144's are very good pads, 1155's are better if you are going to do some track work too.
