Scottish Elises

Looks like I wont be running at this weekends SIDC event.

Dyno day planned for yesterday, lost spark again. Fault traced to a break in the loom. When Dan is fault finding he can also hear a noise from the engine that shouldn't be there. Compression check reveals no.1 cylinder is way down on compression. The engine is blowing back into the inlet on no.1 cylinder on the compression stroke. Suspected cause is corrosion build up on the inlet valve causing it not to seat properly or possibly a bent inlet valve. Regardless the head is coming off again.

Takes a deep breath and blows it out again.. Shopping on Saturday then dear..

I have had a similar problem with 2 & 3 cylinders on mine Vic, put it down to valve clearance on mine as all the inlets were tight now the engine is well and truely bedded in. just going to run this one till it goes BANG .

New engine in developement, currently finacialy embarrassed which is holding things up a bit. You know how it goes..............

Yep, I know exactly how it goes, you start with a budget in your head and then you can basically double it by the time your done.

Double it, I only wish I ended up that close

What cams are you running on this engine now? Is it still hydraulic or have you got mechanical+shims?

I know how you feel, when putting my car on the road I hit step back after step back and it does get you down. Hope You/Dan gets it fixed without too much trouble.

hydraulic lifters, think it's a 285 cam, it was whatever KiwiRog recomended.

Should have asked the other part of the question first ... has it already run with these cams prior to developing the loss of compression? Anyway, if it's hydraulic then I agree you'll have to take the head off anyway, so kind of doesn't matter ...

Could it be a stuck lifter? Cam ladder off, cams out, buckets out adn have a look/measure? Got to be woth a try before ripping the head off? Will also show if a valve is stuck or not?

If we lived closer you could have put my head on John, 190hp, 285 mech cams.

Already checked that. Pretty sure it's just a sh1tty valve seat. Ho hum.

Bad luck matey,best of luck getting it sorted!

Suspected cause confirmed. Valves do not appear bent but will be checked tomorrow.

This engine only has to last to the end of this season. Honda conversion and Exige body for next year.

Will you still do the Sprint Chanponiship next year then ?

I was thinking of entering my Elise. Against the clock really as I would be in a class with Radicals etc ...

Yep, will be entering when the car is ready. A few dash mods to sort and the aerodynamics to finish and that's me ready.
