Finally popped in the Odyssey 545, old one looks well out of shape, could it be a product of continued trickle charging ?

Unlikely to be trickle charging unless the trickle is a bit large for the battery. Contact Odessey see what they have to say - can't be far off splitting the case and spewing it's nasty contents

Low amp bike trickle.

"When a battery swells like yours it is normally a sign of over-charging. The battery will heat up and soften the casing before the internal pressure distorts it. All the acid within Varley Red Top batteries is contained within an absorbent glass mat so this will not come out even if the battery case is ruptured.

If there isn't a fault with your charger/alternator, it usually means the battery has become over-discharged at some point. A short-circuit within 1 of the 6 battery cells can then form, thus reducing the nominal 12V battery to only 10V. When this battery is recharged with a 12V supply, the battery can swell as your has. "

I always suggest that if at all possible you disconnect the battery rather than trickle charge when left for prolonged periods without use ...

Cheers,

I have a sinking feeling I have let the replacement over discharge again. Arse.

I use a 2a mbike charger! Should have followed Robins advice and disconnected.

I guess that continues to charge when the battery is full?

Good question, no mention of it shutting off / conditioning when full...

The DMS chargers for these can be left on indefinitely on both Red Tops and normal car/bike batteries. I have the wee 2.7A one on the left:
