Mobile phone car kit installation

Post by james » Tue Jun 27, 2006 10:35 pm

I am getting a "professional" Nokia car kit installed soon. My employer is paying for it as the S2 is my "company car" :)

Anyway, the instructions say to decide where I want it mounted and to tell the installers what car I have so they can order the correct bracket. Not sure the Elise will be on their list but I cant seem to find a good mounting location.

Whats directly behind the heater controls? Could they drill a hole (!) and use some nice self tappers on the aly panel? Or has anyone else fitted such a kit?

Sorry this is not conducive to the stripped out racey nature of most Elise owners but I want my handsfree capabilities back again so I can speak to people when stuck in traffic or lost on the way to a meeting. Help is most appreciated :)

Can't you just get something along the lines of the hangar111 mobile holder? It screws onto the dash in place of one of the bolts/screws.

I answered a call in my car once, I still have no idea who it was.

Oh Oh - before Shug cracks it:

I could barely hear the caller above the noise my tappets were making.

Richard

Cant understand the S1 versus S2 issue that seems to be part of Elise ownership. Ok, so I have never driven an S1 and the salesman said the S2 was "refined compared to earlier models" which made me laugh.

So looks like I'm on my own regads the car kit. If you see an S2 being driven by someone appearing to talk to themselves then that'll be me :)

I have the nokia kit fitted.
Get the dashmount bracket that slides along the side of the radio. then you don't need to drill any holes.

It's just an excuse for a little gentle ribbing  Nothing serious.

There isn't anthing in it really! Honest! :D

Does the parts manual show the exploded drawing of the dash? That will give you an idea of what is under there. The S1 is pretty much hollow, but then it is everywhere!

Please all jump in and correct this:

S1 was designed and built on a shoestring to be a low volume lightweight sportscar. Back to Lotus' roots as it were. However it was so good it quickly took over form the Esprit as the core car and sold very well.

It became obvious though that owners were now used to things such as comfort and carpets in their cars so after a selection of higher power versions (135/160) the exige and the 340R, the newer more friendly version came out, the S2. The S2 is definatly easier to live with and was better built (Only just) and had things like cutaway sills to make getting in and out less of a problem.

The S2 is therefore a more refined and has a wider appeal to the masses. It's still a manic street legal racer under the bodywork, but it is now aimed slightly differently. As a result the S1 is seen as the raw, rough, seat of your pants, is it going to survive this next outing experience, where as the S2 is a proper production car with refinements such as a roof that isn't a marquee and comfy seats, as well as a better suspention setup as standard.

You only have to see what us S1 drivers beg, borrow and steal form S2s to realise that some bits are just plain better. I myself have S2 suspention and and S2 wiper, as they work where as the originals were rubbish and I'm now looking for S2 seats.

That said there is still a big divide about the looks. Just ask Ed about his S1 Exige fetish  (He already has an S2 Exige FFS)

In a nutshell, and probably mostly tripe, but some one who knows better will correct me shortly....

The S2 is slightly more refined because so many S1 owners added carpets, radios, driving lights etc. proving people don't really want the rawness that they claim they do.
