Tyres again...

Post by mwmackenzie » Thu May 20, 2010 9:12 pm

What is considered the best budget tyre for fast road and track?

Khumo KU31
Khumo MX KU15
Hankook RS2 http://www.rarerims.co.uk/tyres_sub2.as ... RangeID=90
Falken FK452

oooh Yoko Advan AD 08.... mmmm http://www.rarerims.co.uk/tyres_sub2.as ... &intPage=2
any others?

What have you used and liked on road/track?

I don't want toyo due to too much tyre wall flex allegedly

Discuss.. :thumbsup

I don't have one at the moment, not up for R rated tyres though just a good allrounder cheaper than Advans

Just fitted KU31 Sports from Camskill to the Audi TT. They seem to be pretty highly regarded.

I am using the V70 Ecsta on N3 as a track and road car. Too early to report, but they do not seem to have a lot of tread depth on them.

tbh the hankooks are the most tempting at the mo at £300 a ful set.. Track orientated compound with a road style tread?? not that I can afford them hahaha, need 2 rears for MOT once I get my car back in a few weeks though  matbe just 2 rear advans would be as cheap as my fronts are ok? but i'm thinking the age of my fronts may have them past their best?

I have a pair of rear advans I could possibly sell. They have 7mm on them.

Mark i had RS2's on my S2000...interesting to say the least, ask Mckeann and BigD! However i now have them on my DC2 and they seem pretty good

I will be going for the AD08's soon for my car but it won't be from Rarerims, £440 from them versus £340 for Ears Motorsport in 195/55/15

When considering budget tyres I've been thinking over the last while about giving toyos another chance. I've currently got KU31s on and although they're great when it's dry I'm not so sure about them when it's wet. My car gets driven all year round and over the winter I didn't trust them as much as I did the toyos (which everyone accepts are excellent in the wet). I did find them utterly hopeless (the toyos) to start with last time due to the soft sidewalls, but I think that is partly due to me not having enough air in them. I'd set the pressures at 23F 24R which was what worked best for the BFGs I had before them (and they were fab :( ). I can't help wondering that maybe if I'd had the pressures higher from the start then the difference wouldn't have been so marked.... :?

With the KU31s the pressures are 26F 27R and I wonder if these pressures might be more suitable for the T1Rs to help cure the sidewall flex :?

edited to add I've just noticed the lack of availability of the KU31 rears. Decision might have been made for me...

I saw a set of Advan AD08 on a DC2 Integra at Kames a couple of weeks ago. Very soft (almost R compound soft) - not sure they would last well as a road tyre.

In case it's of interest. Camskill have a special offer on T1R's at the minute. Just picked up 2-fronts for £60!!

I run F22/R24 in my T1R's as anything much more than that and they feel very hard. Probably due to stiff sidewalls as mentioned above.

That's pretty much what i had read and was wanting tbh, something in between road and track tyres 8)

I was going to try them myself but Camskill didn't have the right sizes so I just bit the bullet and got R888s.

Hi Mike, what was the problem with the RS2's?

Cheers
