Pikey Power...T16 content

Post by ABZ-Elise » Wed Jul 21, 2010 9:12 pm

I thought I'd share this with you lot and I know some of you will like it and some of you won't, but hey who cares :D

A few weeks back I was thinking I'd either sell the elise or do something with it. If I sold it I'd end up loosing loads of money and if I did something with it I'd end up spending loads of money. Luckily I enjoy spending money so I decided to do something with the elise but without spend loads of money. So I bought this...

Image

Yup. A Rover 220 turbo which was about as rotten as they come. Anyway I pulled the engine, box and electrics and scrapped what was left AKA the rust.

I then set about on my poor long suffering elise. I was supprised at how easy the engine comes out.

Image

The T series didn't go in as easy as the K series came out but after a bit fart a$ring about I got it in. It is alot bigger than the K series so space is very tight.

Image

The next step was to start making up mounts. I've almost finished the main engine mount but I'll need to make the lower one before I can get it finished off. But then again I might end up making a completely new one as I'm not 100% happy with it so far.

Image

Thats all for now. I hoping to have the engine mounts finished before I have to goback offshore. Sorry for the crap quality of the pics but I've only got an iphone to use as a camera.

Kev.

Worth keeping measurements in case any more of us loons gets the same idea?

You need to get over to NORLOG
P.A.T (AKA the Big Bald Bastid) has already been here and ran his for ages I think he sold it to his brother...

Might be worth picking his brains, he had a chargecooler on his.

Can't find the threads now...

I had a look on there a few weeks back but couldn't find anything. Been speaking to Phil (firecracker) on seloc who has been giving me helpful tips.

My plan is to go for a air to water chargecooler using the heater pipes in the sills to move the water around. I never used the heaters anyway as they were sh!te so no great loss.

i also think Jez Baker (Lotus on track & elisetrophy) put one in the back of his elise and raced it last year.

If you need his contact details give me a shout.

PS Jez is the biggest Pikey out there :damnfunny

Yeah if you could PM me his details that would be spot on. He had a topic about his build on one of the forums but the pics are no longer there. The more info and pics I can get from people the easier it will be for me.

Haha, at least I've got the right badge and shape

Last year I did buy a saab 2L turbo engine which shares the same block as the vx 2.2 NA engine, unfortunately the S1 elise chassis and the vx chassis are alot different so there was no chance of it fitting unless I cut the mounting plinths off the chassis (which I'll never do)

What's the ancestry of the T16 engine then? K with Turbo? Or is that too simplistic!

Am I the only one that has wondered why the MR2 turbo engine has never been considered???!

it's specifically designed to work in that position and can easily have 300bhp extracted out of it with a decent filter, exhaust and engine management.

T series bolts onto the PG1 box and sits in roughly the same place as the K. Think the power looms even just plug into each other (as it was designed to share platforms with the K) Not related to the K though (it was a Honda lump IIRC and cast iron blocked) About as straight-forward an engine swap as it's possible to do.

You can theoretically slot anything in that'll fit - the problem comes with getting the looms, mounts and all the plumbing right. As the T shared cars with the K, a lot of this is simpler to do.

How does that differ from the Audi 1.8T and would it be worth the costs involved in designing your own ancilliaries from scratch to have an alternative with no real benefits? Unless it's massively lighter, you can get more power from the Audi and it's already tried and tested and there's plenty of donor engines out there (which is another downside the MR2 engine will have)
