IPOD connections (some Lotus content)

Post by delands » Sat Aug 21, 2010 9:19 pm

I know some of the Elises/ Exiges have I-Pod conencting cables to bottom of I-pod, however, is there such a thing as an adaptor to go on that which would have a 3.5mm male jack on the end?

This would enable any mp3 player to use the cable via its headphone socket.

Yeah I've got one on mine. You'll need to find the right one for your head unit though. I got the cable for mine (blaupunkt unit), plugged it in the back and fed it out into the alu tray under the head unit.

err, sorry, nope... there is a cable in place already to plug an ipod onto.. however, it needs to be converted to have a 3.5mm jack on the end so that could go to any headphone socket.

Have you just suggested taking the whole cable away and replacing with another? The adaptor would enable ipod and other mp3 playes connectivity.

Can't help specifically with your original enquiry, but I wouldn't worry about ordering stuff from HK. Done it quite a few times myself and generally works out OK. Sometimes quality can be a bit of a lottery but you have to expect that when the stuff is so cheap. The guy seems to have pretty good feedback.

This may or may not work depending on the how the head unit cable is designed - Apple have used the same physical connector since the original ipod, but the exact pin out and compatibility between the various pods and docks is not simple.

The chances are that if the head unit can list the contents of the pod on its display, then it probably won't work.

If the head unit doesn't list the pod contents then the chances are it's a solution based on line-out signals and will probably work with any line-out audio source.

Personally, I would not bother - either be a fan boy and suck up whatever apple allow you to buy from them - or rip out the cable and put in something based on a standard (USB or 3.5mm audio stereo jack) and benefit from open standards and the value that tends to bring to the end user (at the expense of Microsoft/Apple/IBM/...).

Cheers,
Robin

I was in the same boat when we got our Elise. Ended up just buying an ipod. TBH I'm pretty pleased. Just leave it in the car all the time now. I've noticed it will charge when the stereo's on, although when I plug in a newer ipod, it doesn't charge, but will still play and display the song titles with no probs :?

Welcome to Apple's world ... what used to work doesn't work for no good reason other than that way they can sell you an apple approved accessory for twice the price of the HK stuff ...

There's a project out there to provide a power source for ipod, etc. They're on their 4th revision I think - nothing much changed, just that Apple keep adding new tweaks to their charger wiring to try and make you buy Apple chargers ;-)

Cheers,
Robin

I've bought the cable, so will try it out and see if it works. My phone has 32Gb of music on it and dont wont to pay £100+ for an ipod to have less storage especially if this converts it to a 3.5m jack to fit in headphone socket.

Here's hoping.

Keep us posted on the results.
I'd be keen to go down this road too for when the old ipod gives up the ghost.

That's some serious amount of driving to get through 32Gb worth of music :D
