Fitting Stereo

I've just upgraded the rubbish stereo that came with my S2 for an Alpine jobby that can use my Ipod nano. Problem is that there are so many peripheral connectors dangling out of the back of it that there isnt much room to slide the unit back all the way.
Do I need to remove the top of the dashboard so I can slide it back (holding the cables out of the way) then refit the dash?
I need to run the iPod cable down to the "oddment tray" so I need to remove the trim around the left speaker (and drill a hole in the side). Do I need to remove the speaker to remove the trim? It seems stuck even though I've removed all the star headed screws.
Advice appreciated before I spend all day tomorrow taking more and more bits off the car!
