Humming noise when reversing slowly

Post by The_Rossatron » Tue Jul 18, 2006 9:53 am

I get a deepish humming noise when i reverse slowly, pretty sure its coming from the back of the car. Brake binding perhaps? Doesn't do it going forwards though? Any thoughts?

It's not just the gearbox whine is it? PG1s are noisy beasties and get noisier if there's less oil in there. Does it rattle like f**k on idle? (you can tell if it's gearbox, by pressing the clutch in at idle - the noise that dies away is the 'box :D)

Tried pushing the clutch when the noise was happening but it stayed there. Sounds more like something rubbing against something else, or something is too tight.

While you were reversing? It would still make a noise as the 'box is still turning, it's just disconnected from the engine.

I meant to check stationary at idle, to see if the box was overly noisy. If it's chuntering away like a mad thing, it might be a wee bitty light on oil.

Yours is a Rover engine, right?

Has it always done it, or is it a new noise? - if it's always done it, it's 99% likely just to be a noisy reverse gear.

If it's something rubbing, it would likely do it in first too - the rear pads tend not to move about like the fronts, but I suppose it is a possibility....
