Pre Spa spannering "UJI" by the dynamic duo

Post by Sanjøy » Wed Oct 13, 2010 12:48 am

Thought I would attempt to rival Rich with a diary of work Campbell and I are undertaking on his car prior to his Spa trip.
  • Replace radiator with full alloy version
Replace both rear wheel bearings and hub flanges
Remove steering rack and ship for refurb at Ken Brown Motor Engineers Hillington
Inspect and poss replace a few choice balljoints along the way
Diagnose a knocking from the rear, if not cured by wheel bearing changes ... suspect toelinks but who knows
    Replace all damper bolts
    Fix brake pedal switch
Refurb / fix driving lights mounts
6th Oct Robin & Campbell head over with UJI and we get her up on the ramps and then lower the front of the ramps to permit the wheels to come off.

9th Oct Campbell came over and we set about getting the clam off. <2 hours and one coffee later (Sarah must try harder and have cakes ready). No munted bolts and having a car garaged and with headlight covers form new has paid dividends.

11th I find some time(!) and give the brakes a wee tidy and there are now dimples and grooves on them again.

12th Campbell heads over with the parts. We set about getting the rad out. Few munted front mild steel screws, hacksaw and big grip pliers get them off. Final bolt holding the rad in to the top of the cowl poses the biggest pita. Finish just after midnight with the rad out.

And nothing broken!

Not bad for a half-shift I reckon. We better not get too good at this or Robin will never help us again!

I should point out that the remote webcam support is going nicely, thanks Robin. Next time if you leave the Skype call open you can have a laugh at our skillz. Oh what you missed after tonight's call ;-)

LOL.

I'm sure we could create a flyonthewall docudrama out of it, if we simply kept the webcam running in record mode

Top effort. If ok, I'd be interested in coming over and watching bearing and ball joint removal/refitting for future reference. :)

Ah.

Well.

Bearing will now have to be done at a local garage, as we were reliant on Robin's expertise a) because it's a rear so has complications and b) to get access to a suitable press to pull things out and push them in. But he has stacks on now and needs to prioritise on the dayjob. Quite rightly too.

However, might do a couple of balljoints - although none seem to be as worn as we thought so that might be a damp squib too!

I can, although remain anxious about the overall removal / refit procedure too. Have you done one of these before? (You probably have!!!)

Both nuts are fresh because SLS put new bearings barely 2 months ago. Sadly we couldn't get fresh hub flanges at the time, backorder, so at least one has started to taper we think.

Hopefully the freshness of the nut fitment might help?

If not...it's definitely going to a garage before I make things any worse!!

Shug...you may yet get a cordial invite the deepest darkest East, stand by...

Minds boggles as to what S could do to me with that.
