Scottish Elises

Technical ... kind off. Broke the handle lifting my rather old but good petrol lawnmower. Possible to solder it back together i think but do i need a blacksmith to do this ? can anyone recommend someone around the Dundee area ? happy to give it a go myself if some cheap tools can be recommended.

I use hard (silver) solder for jobs that need strength but don't need welding.
It will join dissimilar metals to a degree too: steel/brass/bronze/iron (but not ali)

Silver solder (Ebay) + flux (Ebay) + MAPP gas blowtorch (B&Q) is all that's required.

Good idea, will try and upload an image tonight when i get home.

only online for a short while so don't have time to look up a picture/example but if its broken on a straight run a wee tube clamp might do if you really need it. Although at this time of year I recon you'll have a few months to get it fixed

thanks for the reply by the way chaps. Dont think i have used a soldering iron since 2nd year at high school, happy to give it a go.

PS the hole at the break is redundent, couple of strips soldered ether side would work i think.

How about drilling 2 holes further up (where it starts going tubular) & bolting a brace/strap along the flatter edge, to give it a bit more strength?

Not a bad idea ! lose 2 inches on the handle but that could be ok ... im short

Just seen the pics.
Batter both sides flat further down and loose a couple of inches of handle?
Or find a bit of tube that fits over the round bit, bolt through and then batter the top bit flat to suit.

That's not a job for solder.

Either get a welder/blacksmith to weld it back together or do a 'bodge' type repair as described above.

Weld it, with a bit of plate for good measure

I'm 45 minutes up the road from you bring it up and i will weld it back together its an easy fix.

If you feel adventurous you can even have a shot at welding

Which is where i end up spending ages blowing holes in it

I can't weld but I can stick things together with a welder...
Eventually the holes fill themselves if you put enough mig wire in them...
