From time to time I keep hearing a metal clunk come from under the car, at the front and I can't work out what the heck it is...
Has only just come on over the last few days and as the weather has been awful and the car has been steaming up the only thing I have been using that I don't normally is the air con. Could it be the pipes clanging off each other/something else?
Does anyone know where in the side 'skirts' the pipes are located and how they are held in? i.e. stuck across the top or bottom, clamped down, left hanging etc.
No idea what else it could be but it's happened 4 or 5 times now in the last few weeks over around 100 miles.
Metal Clunk - A/C?
Re: Metal Clunk - A/C?
Is it coming from the brakes?
Some pads are a poorish fit in the brake carrier and can clunk about at low speeds until you press the pedal. You get 3M rubber pads for this which can dampen the clunking and wok fairly well. Let me know if it is this and i will try and point you in the direction of cheap 3M pad material.
May be something totaly different but just putting my experiences in!
Cheers

Re: Metal Clunk - A/C?
Thanks Chris.
It's not the pads - already got the buffers in and it's not a rattle, it's definitely a loud metal clunk noise of some sort.
Maybe the suspension come to think about it, it's the only other thing I can think it might be.

Re: Metal Clunk - A/C?
The two main clunks from the front I've had during ownership were a shagged shock (fixed) and a worn steering rack(not fixed yet).
I hope yours is more trivial.

Agreed, jack it up and check all the bushes and balljoints, and check theres no oil leaking out the shocks that might be a giveaway for damper failure.
other cluncks can come from an ill fitting battery clamp causing the battery to slide back and forward (and up and down)

Re: Metal Clunk - A/C?
I'm going to jack it up and have a good look this weekend and see if I can spot anything. Starting to wonder if it's something to do with the suspension but leaning more towards the springs due to the type of noise.
Re: Metal Clunk - A/C?
oh well, obviously you'll know best since you can hear it.
