340 dash removal

Anyone removed the stacks from a 340?
My gauge for water temp mileage etc has failed, dials still work and backlight on the LCD is operational just no information from the controller. For sending back to stack do I need to remove both the dash instruments and the big controller under the dash or just one or the other?
If I needd the dash itself, how easy is it to remove? ie body off (stupid question as everything needs the body off on this car!) and complete dash removal?
