Ball Joint Renewal?

I have just spent the morning dismantling the passenger side suspension in preperation for having a go at replacing the wheel bearing.
After a minimal bit of swearing I now have the hub off and ready to take it somewhere to have a go at pressing the old one out and the new one in. My brother works at a metal fabricators so I am hoping they can assist.

The biggest problem I have discovered is that the balljoint rubbers have perished :( so obviously these also need replacing now. I was having a look and invisaged me having to remove the wishbones to take them and the hub to have them pressed out. However, I see from a recent thread that Rich undertook this job and there would appear to be a handy little tool that allows the job to be done "on car".

Is this a standard tool that can be purchased at a motor factors? Or is there anyone in Fife who could lend me one for a couple of days?

Are the ball joints a standard item? Again would my local friendly motor factor to be able to suplly these? I have a note that they are QH QSJ883S (from FAQ)

I have also discovered that my brake disks are shot so I have bought 4 new ones and will be having a go at replacing these. Looks a simple enough job.

Either borrow one (there's a few kicking about SE) or buy one from Geary:

Think Mac's got one, Rich might (although I think he broke it) Stephen also has one IIRC....

Motor factor can supply balljoints - Stephen does too, but I think he's on hols ATM

Any idea whether this is a standard tool that can be purchased locally? Could really do with getting on with the job.

I did see that Geary had one as I have just received the parts from him at lunchtime. However when I ordered I didn't think that I had a need for the tool :D

I have Stephens ball joint tool and it's a little tired but servicable, the bolts need replacing but I'll sort that. I'm sure Stephen would be happy for you to borrow it.

Check out my thread about ball joint types and check the damn things before buying them! Stephen will be back soon and has some of the proper joints for me, I'm sure he can do you the same deal on his retrn.

Any chance I could borrow a shot of Stephens tool? Would it be easy enough to repair the tool?

My dad works at the airbase so I could perhaps arrange for him to pick it up or I could pop along for it, if you didn't mind.

Nope - it started as a bodge to do the job in situ and was developed into a tool for sale. The other way is to take off the wishbones and get them pressed out where you're getting the bearing pressed.

Pain in the knackers though...

Brake discs are easy enough as you say, the old ones might need some persuation to come of though.

Good thing about the S1 is that you only need the hammer. There's no bolts that you have to drill out first, then go postal with said hammer....

Drop Stephen a line it's his tool afterall, I can't see him objecting. I also have to collect and fit the joints to the other 3 corners on my car.... You will also need a ball joint splitter the screw type not the fork type and a big hammer....


Are you around next weekend? 12-13th Aug? Mini spanners and sponges perhaps? Ball joints were quire straight forward really, once I had the right joints..

Yeah, does look like a real hassle to remove the wishbones. I could see how to get 3 of the bolts out but wasn't sure how you would get the last one out due to the sterring rack fowling it's exit.

BTW just ordered 4 new ball joints from Mr Mechanic in Buckhaven. £11 + VAT each (Quinton Hazell QSJ883S)

Right away to see if I can get this bearing out. Wish me luck!

My joints said that on the box too... Check them post pics if you need a second opinion, once the old (Imperial FFS) joints are out you're stuffed...

Then you evidently don't frigging use them!!!

If they are on for a while and have got through a few heat cycles, they tend to stick to the hub flange (hurrr, I said flange....)

Liberal abuse with big hammery thing required to shift - perhaps rubber, if you want to use the discs again... ;)

Of course, the new ones just slip on (after getting the flange - fnurk - very clean and perhaps a light smear of copaslip on the face)

They have been blue 3 times now, I have a very intermittant yet heavy right foot. They are OEM ones though so prolly suffering from lotus tolerances again +/- 5mm or so :roll:
