Electrical problems

Post by BiggestNizzy » Fri May 27, 2011 2:30 pm

On the way home from work today I noticed that when I put my foot on the brake the radio went off !

managed to get the car home only to find that now she won't start nothing from the starter motor, the fuel pump primes ok though

I have my spare battery on charge, so I will see if it's the battery later. I have had no warning lights to tell me it isn't charging (I also gave away my spare alternator yesterday) I put a meter across the battery that was giving 12.5v

You need to measure the battery voltage while the engine is running. 12.5 whilst the engine was running would imply the alternator isn't charging. Often as not on an S1 this is caused by a broken wire at the back of the alternator, those the wire being broken can sometimes lead to the alternator failing (if the wire fails while the alternator is working hard, it can cause some issues in the regulator pack).

Cheers,
Robin

Started the car up using jump leads and checked the voltage across the battery and got 11v so my guessing is the alternator is gubbed.

It seems to run away fine once you have it started.

As I have P&L it would be ideal to have the car break down as I get myself into work on monday. What would be the safest way of doing that ?

Jump start it, drive half way to work, stall the engine. It won't restart, I assume, as there's not enough juice in the battery to crank the starter?

I put my fully charged spare battery in this morning and the car would still not start, I had to bump start it (other than having to push it up the hill so it could roll down it fired up easy) on my way to work the dash lit up like a chritsmas tree all the lights went on with the exception of the oil prerssure and charge lights at this point it became stuttery.

nursed it to stewarton and I am awaiting the nice man from the AA

Funny how pushing the brake pedal made the stereo turn off?? I have a similar problem with mine that if I pull the brake pedal up all the lights turn on (indicators, headlights). Can't figure out how that is happening??? The only link to the electrical system from the brake pedal is the brake light swith which won't be making any contact when you pull up the brake pedal.

The brake light switch is push to off so maybe, pop the switch out as see what happens when you click it.
