Cheap HIDs

Post by Sanjøy » Tue May 31, 2011 5:54 pm

I bought these HIDs for the 340 some years ago, still working strong although a good enough thump occasionally knocks my wiring.

Got my first email form the supplier showing off their new site and slimline model.

Worthy upgrade for those who use their car on country roads and cheap enough for a punt. If the Merc did not need silly resistors to stop the onboard having a fit it would have set fitted too.

Few spade connectors, 340 needed some jiggery pokery to hold them in to the projector housing.

There are new rules coming in for the MOT next year; cars with HID's fitted must have head light washers and self levelling (AFAIK) so those who have them may come across a problem or two!

Thats been a rule for a while now, but only on new cars with them fitted from factory, afaik.

My evo had factory fitted xenons with no washers, it must be post dated.

I can't find anything on line, but an MOT tester was telling me that the rule applies to all cars from next year... or at least that's what I understood. Will try and find out for sure.

It's part of the type approal regs for new vehicles.

Problem is that none of the bulbs are E marked and you can't get a good beam pattern from none-HID lamps

I too have read that MOTs will be changing to incorperate HID levelling and wash along with a load more stuff (some vehicles exempted from the leveling in particuar sports cars with limited boot space as the rake doesn't change much) but also that they may go to 2 yearly...

I have a set of them on my VX. Quite easy to fit and also reversable come MOT time if required.

I put a set in the 911 a few years ago, massive improvement. In fact so massive that you couldn't tell main beam from dip. My local MOT tester who is generally helpful did point out a few reasons you shouldn't have them, I don't remember the details, but essentially the lamp must be designed for HID. Given that my lights were capable of blinding people in the next village, it probably was a foolish experiment. So I had to change them back, but did rebuild the headlight with new lens, reflector and bulb so now much better than the original. I've still got the kit but no use for it.
