Apologies if this is a common question, but I couldn't find the answer after a trawl through the archives.

I've got a 2,000 mile trip to France next month, and my rear AD07's are about a 1-2 mm above the wear markers. What's the general consensus on how much tyre wear I've got left before they're illegal?

Not sure if i understand your question. The wear markers are 1.6mm which is the legal limit so you have 1-2mm left. As for miles left, depends on many things but i would be tempted to change them before hand.

I think He's 1-2mm above the tread markers Mike.

How many miles have you done so far on those tyres? i.e. what rate of wear are you driving at?

If you are doing a lot of motorway and distance driving, and not much B road blasts, I would expect little wear, as long as your alignment is okay.

The tyres have done 7k miles, although I've only done 2.5k of those so difficult to tell how heavy I am on them. The trip is with the other half, so I can't imagine there will be much opportunity for enthusiastic driving.

My question was probably more along the lines of whether the tread markers were the legal limit....being cynical, I could imagine that the manufacturers "marker" would still be well within the legal limit. Am I wide of the mark?

I think they'll go borderline at best. Hot weather etc, 2 or 3k miles for your trip presumably. Worse still if you get torrential rain on French motorways, then at that level, you can expect to aquaplane straight to the scene of the accident.

If in doubt, no way that you should risk it, as Campbell says, if it is wet you have the safety angle, if you go below minimums you have the Law at three points a tyre, and the Insurance if you have an accident.

if you find yourself guessing if there will be enough tire tread for a trip around unknown roads, with your loved passenger........then, your gambling! Why take the risk get a new set of quality rubber and pay the money......i was always told by my old dog to never compromise on tires.....always, premium tires and spend the money! he would always say leigh, you have to remember its the only thing, between you in the car and the ground and that contact patch is only the size of your palm; the faster you go the smaller it gets!.....

I can understand if someone has no evidence of tyre wear rates on a car like an Elise, they will want to ask the question

Thanks to everyone for the comments. (Campbell - didn't take it any way other than as good advice)

My last Elise had the Bridgestones on it and I got well over 10k out of the rears on that, so was really just querying whether the tread markers were the limit on the Yokos. I'd actually already booked the car in for a tyre change before I posted....was just double-checking that I wasn't being overly cautious.
