4-2-1 vs Standard Flexi

This will probably be the first of many similar threads whilst I figure out what to do to my shed in order to get it ready for Frolicing...so bare with me...

The bolts holding one of my engine mounts in place recently broke, causing the engine to drop a bit on one side and tear the flexi in the process. So.... do I replace with like for like, or is a 4-2-1 an amazingly worthwhile upgrade for a car like mine.

Obviously my engine is totally standard in every way and the rumours of it having a 135 head and some cams are clearly lies... <whistles innocently>

Thoughts and advice welcome!

Cheers!

Dave.

I think it's worth fitting the piper manifold.

It won't give you a lot, but the cost to replace the manifold and downpipe is similar unless you go pikey and buy scrapper stuff or scavenge around for spare S2 manifold.

The piper is a 4:2:1 with a flexi section at the back.

If you want the dogs bollocks then the eliseparts manifold is the way ahead:

http://www.eliseparts.com/products/show ... -manifold/

But it's 600 notes and is unlikely to give you much by way of power as your existing manifold was probably OK or close to OK for the spec of the standard head and cams that you're using. Also you would need to consider fitting the stiffer lower engine mount to avoid the engine rocking as this pipe has no flexi.

If it's deffo just the downpipe that's gone then the smart money is on a replacement downpipe - I've heard these are well less than 100 from motor factors.

Cheers,
Robin

Mine doesn't have this configuration either and I would def recomend the piper it felt better at the bottom end ;) but it will make you deaf if you have a de-cat.

If you can find a s/h 4-2-1 then do it, it brought the peak torque down on mine a bit. Otherwise standard bits will be much cheaper.

Hi Dave I've got a Piper 4-2-1 which I'll be selling on, I've got no need for it as I have a V6   If you're interested, I'm sure we can come to a deal. Only problem at the mo is depending how much of a hurry you are for it as it's down in Durham. I'm just waiting for some parts from Eliseparts and Elise-Shop to be delivered and then I'll be heading down to drop off the parts and collect my old engine/gearbox etc, hopefully the end of next week.

The Elise parts manifold is made by Simpson racing and is a beautifully made bit of kit but it's a solid manifold and needs to be fitted with an adjustable lower engine mount. Them piper is your best bet for a road car and if you decide not to bother give me a shout as I have a original flexi lying around, in fact a whole system with Janspeed back box, looking for a new home.

After reaidng this, just having a look at what options there are for manifolds with flexi sections.

Direct from Piper £582
http://www.piperexhausts.co.uk/pipersto ... ts_id=1827

Janspeed one £493
http://www.ptp-ltd.co.uk/shop/29_30/1/l ... _elise.htm

Not cheap anyway...

I think the Piper one can be had for a little less than Piper's online price, but not hugely so ...
