Braided Hoses on ABS equipped car

Post by bergwerk » Mon Jul 25, 2011 12:24 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm considering Goodridge Braided hoses for my Toyota engined Elise S, after reading some other forums - owners seem to get mocked when they fit these because it makes diddly squat of a difference to the car apart from looking good (when you have a spare day to take the clam off for a look), and lasting longer (I've never had a car with damaged or worn out hoses)

So has anyone had this done, or any thoughts on this at all will help me greatly on this boggle.

Cheers - my adrenalin seeking friends!

PS -i will be using motul 600 fluid if it goes ahead.

Change the fluid.

Servo will kill all brake feel benefits and even on non-servo'd cars new standard hoses would most likely feel 90% as good as braided anyway.
Hoses do fail over time due to perishing and abrasion, but it should be good for 10-15 years.

Most people will fit them to give a better pedal feel. The servo in your ABS systems will mask all of that, so you won't notice a difference. Therefore, the only real benefit of fitting would be increased burst pressure (that your foot could never deliver to a healthy hose) and longer life.

I wouldn't in an ABS car, but plenty have. You pays your money...

PS: Much better changing pads to something like Carbon Lorraine CL5+ if you haven't already. That, you will feel.

I've got a set of EBC yellow pads ordered from ebay on the cheap, but waiting for EBC Ultimax discs from eliseparts (delayed because they say they had changed supplier for the anti corrosion coating used on the discs)

When these pads go, i'll invest in better ones.

Just cancelled my order for the hoses - Ian said he'd refund the money immediately! nice!

Agree with mckeann here - I had the misfortune of fitting them to my car and they are by far the sh*ttest pads I've ever put on it (and I've put on some pikey old sh*te over the years) No power, no feel and pish out dust like there's no tomorrow.

First time ever, I'm pulling out a set of pads before they are fully dead - can't stand them any longer...

Aw sh*t! ive got them sitting downstairs!

Maybe i could waste them then upgrade later, or are they that bad that they'll ruin the discs and tear out my soul? :(

I wouldn't bother. I used to think it was worthwhile but haven't bothered on my last few cars with no loss in brake feel. If you are very heavy on your brakes on track, you might consider it, but with a servo it's of limited benefit I think.

If you do it, make sure that you fit the pipes in a way that they cannot abrade the rubber in the P-clips otherwise you will get catastrophic failure. The typical braided hose is a smaller OD than the stock rubber pipes, so when you route it through the P-clip it will be free to move. The outside of the pipe is abrasive due to the braiding process and it will saw through the P-clip rubber, but not the steel clip itself. So once the rubber is gone, it's steel-on-steel and the pipe will fail, usually at the least convenient point in time ...

Cheers,
Robin

Pagid RS42, Mintex 1144 or Carbone Lorraine RC5+ are all serious contenders as a tangible improvement over standard.

I haven't used any EBC pads, of any colour, ever, and would see no reason to!

It has been said that some EBC pads do indeed eat disks, although you could say that of any pad since broadly that's what it's meant to do :damnfunny

i actually have RS42's at the front, but thought i could get away with a cheapo set until i have the cash to splash since i do no trackdays at all.

I guess nobody wants to buy them off me now after reading this thread lol!

Return to retailer possible?

If you go from 42s to them, they will feel like you've just slotted in two blocks of oiled wood. If cheap is required, Mintex 1144 are the least expensive I'd fit - although they do produce a lot of dust.

Unfortunately too late to return Shug,

mind what you were saying about you pays your money...

I paid £70 for the full set lol!

Sounds like i'd be better off spending the money on aerodynamic magic trees.
