Oil oil everywhere!

Post by DavieK » Sun Oct 02, 2011 11:59 pm

Well after bumping into Kinger yesterday and having a chat I mentioned that I was about to fit the new battery to the elise that was currently in the tanks boot. This was after finally getting to spend some time figuring out that it was neither dodgy wiring or a knackered alternator that stranded me in Inverurie a couple of months ago.
Today I stared the driveway ornament and let it come upto temp and had a good look around before i took it out for a run, this never happened as I spotted a oil leak coming from the bottom of the front wheel arch liner on the drivers side  ....

no run=no fun

So spent tonight tidying out the garage or assorted kids toys etc. to make room for what I assume (me bad i know) will be a oil hose change out. The question is if it is the hose going to the oil cooler does anybody know how much roughly I should buy?

Remembering Mikes thread from many moons ago I see he bought hose and fittings from Merlin and these are still available which is a bonus.

One last question is... while messing about with this so far assumed job is there anything else I should be looking at whilst doing this ?

Cheers in advance

No idea, but I'd be more concerned why a hose that doesn't really flex in a pretty well protected area has failed.

I have the oil cooler from my 160 in the garage, I can measure the length of the pipes tonight, and let you know. It also possible that the cooler has a hole in it, but the joints on the pipes leak( mine always did, thats why I changed )

I had new hoses made up a couple of years ago by a local Hydraulics company - one of mine perished over the winter at the top of the arch liner... the oil I asume had went down the hoses leaving them empty at the top IYSWIM and allowed them to perish insdie > out.

Id appreciate that Stu :thumbsup I could take a guess and add extra but a real size to go off of would be great. The leak is at the back side of the liner  so I don't think the cooler is at fault, but being wrong is a hobby of mine so watch this space

This is what i'm guessing happened to ours but will hopefully have time to get a look tonight.

Davie, I have a couple of oil hoses off the 2-11 that might fit failing that IIRC it takes about 2.5m of hose to get from the engine to the front. Seem to remember I bought 5 or 6m for both sides and had some left over.

Cheers Mike

I was thinking of around 6m or 20' to do both sides as theres no point in doing 1 only for the other hose to let go a few months/day or minutes down the line.

Shame, but they will be pretty old bits of hose now...

Sadly, I think we S1 types will have to be thinking more and more about bits perishing now, as well as just wearing out...

Agreed, but as you say the bits are pretty old.

The next job will to be to try and get a suspension refresh past the boss but that could be a " oh look more bits have arrived" job :blackeye
