Hub Carrier Bolts

Post by two4oneuk » Wed Aug 16, 2006 9:04 pm

Does anyone know where to get up rated hub carrier bolts. On the vx220 forum it was mentioned that lotus sport and performance do an uprated kit for when you fit some sticky rubber.
Vauxhall ones are 8.8's and i would like 10.9's which are the uprated version.
Cheers
Martin

Have they been known to break? The loads are taken by the bearing in the first instance and only side loads are taken by the hub bolt I think. I would be very suprosed if you manage to break an M12 bolt with side loads....

The early S1 type were an M10. By now most people should have uprated to the M12 type. I don't know whether or not they are a high tensile bolt, but you do them up FT (>200Nm from memory).

All later S1 and S2 should be fitted with the M12 from the factory. You can tell easily enough by popping out the wheel center and looking in - the nut is 19mm for the M10 and 32mm (IIRC) for the M12.

Cheers,
Robin

Martin,
I think the uprated kit you mention could be for rear toe links?

Was your car not the Hub carrier to upper wishbone bolts that was a problem (where the camber shims are)?

Hub to carrier bolts maybe (3 off)?

I think Rich is referring to the main hub bolts (1 off, which were uprated from early cars M12 to M16).

Nah, I have heard of this before from VX circles. Perhaps an issue with them running big rims... Still, not a thing I've heard of with Elises - try an email to Lotus sport (mac may be along in a minute to give you an email addy)

Quick VX search reveals..

Didn't know that... But the hub carrier bolt issue has been mentioned to me by a VX owner (who, I can't for the life of me remember) If he's running Elise hubs & wheels, I wouldn't think it an issue though... I've still heard of uprated bolts, even for the Elise, but not met anybody who's actually specced them....

Worth a wee email to Lotus Sport to clarify methinks...

Yup.
Martin, do you have the Lotus hubs but the bolts from hub carrier to upper wishbone (steering arm front, upper BJ plinth rear) were retained?

A bit of digging reveals VX ones are 8.8 grade and Lotus 10.9.
M10 x 50 (ish), 8-off for the whole car
Should be a standard Lotus part no. available from MMC?

I'm running standard vx hubs but with 16"/17" combo to give a proper tyre choice.
I've 2 vauxhall ones on the way but will replace all with 12.9's ( as recommended by Mark "The geo". Will try and ring round a few bolt companys in aberdeen first to see what they have.
I'm just gald i manged to get the old bolts out. Vauxhall want £250 + vat for the hub carrier.
If only there was a lotus dealer in Aberdeen!!
