Harness Bars in an Early S1?

Post by Rich H » Wed Aug 31, 2005 2:19 pm

Will fitting of a harness bar stop me using the roof bars stowage behind my seats? The pics I have seen don't seem to make it clear...!

Not going to do anything for a while, but it would be nice to know!

Cheers

Rich

I think so, yes... got a later one myself, so can store them in the boot, but from what I know, the harness bar covers the space for the bows.

You can still get them in, but it may require some constructive thinking to stop them rattling, as they don't have anywhere to locate solidly.

I've a '98 S1 and the bows fit in the boot just fine? I didn't realise you could even put them behind the seats...

The early elise has a canvas bag in the boot and a plastic lid I think, the later one has what you have. They fit behind the seats with a bit of wiggling and alot of trouble...!

Might investigate the boot option anyway see if they'll fit in, or its just dump'em behind the seats and forget about them..... :)

Yeah, I've got the plastic lid and the canvas bag in the boot. But there's a cut out on the back right corner that the bows slip into to ensure they fit. The space behind my seats is always too full of junk to fit a roof as well

Mat,
Is your cut out a "Custom" addition?
I have an early S1 and my bows go behind the seat, which is possibly why they are uneven, are there two little locating holes on either side at about head height? If you have a fibreglass floor to the boot then your car is the later S1. The earliest ones have an alloy boot floor.
The biggest wonder is why lotus did not dedicate a nice storage area for the cant rails and the canvas rather than chuck it tin the boot!!
Upright behind the seat in the corner etc etc?

Come to think of it, I've got a new rear clam on mine, so I guess the boot might be a later one?

The S1 roof was a complete afterthought, the car was designed without a roof so that's why there's sod all storage for it.

Also remember that if you fit harnesses and leave the normal belts in, there are no guarantees that either belts will hold up ok in an accident. There's plenty of arguing about it on seloc but I believe the Lotus position is 1 or the other, not both together.
