Piper Cams
Piper Cams
Looking at a couple sets of piper cams and vernier pulleys which seem quite cheap. There is a choice between the BP270H with pulleys ~ £220 which have done 10,00miles or BP285H for £200. Would the 285s been undriveable on road and would they be inappropriate for my standard head and manifold? Also should I bother?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Piper Cams
The 270,s would be best, 285,s would be to much, rev range is to high for standard engines.
the 270,s will run on the standard ecu, and give about 10-15 hp.

I think its the 285's that you'll a set of throttle bodies to make it work...could be wrong though, I'm sure someone will correct me if they know better.

Re: Piper Cams
I ran a set of 285H with a ported head and bigger valves on a single plenum purely while I was awaiting the TBs arriving. Impatient bugger. Had to have them timed really conservatively (Stu will remember as it was he that did it) and it idled like a burst arse. It can be done, but no reason to if you're not TBing it pretty soon after, 270s will give you a much more drivable car.

Re: Piper Cams
I had 270's on an ali manifold, mild port, 4-2-1 plis a few other bits: ran lovely on MEMS with a nice spread of torque

Re: Piper Cams
Excellent. Thanks for the advice. Bought the 270s for £180 inc verniers so looking forward to fitting them.

Re: Piper Cams
I've had a pm from Smee already so he'll have first refusal on the manifold and the exhaust. But if he isn't interested in 2 months I'll give you a shout.
Manifold is a Piper, can't remember what size but I'm pretty sure it wasn't the large bore one. Has a flex joint on it.
Exhaust, can't remember what size it is either but I do remember it was spec'd for around 200-220bhp (not that my car was anywhere near that)

Re: Piper Cams
I take it that yours will have an automatic tensioner just now, so just replace that with a new one, will be fine.smee wrote:What belt tensioner do I need to get?

No get stu to drill you a M10 hole for a manual tensioner
you can easily trash the valves with a non oe cam on track... in fact an OE cam, but I really wouldn't try it on a 270
Re: Piper Cams
Thanks again,
Cheers Craig, may take you up on that but would get in touch nearer the time, depends how brave I get with the tool kit from the christmas crackers
Thanks Simon, thought I may need to go manual, you've scared me into it.

Re: Piper Cams
Hmmm my bargain cams seems to be turning sour. Prior to making payment I could get hold of the seller almost immediately and we exchanged several emails. Since making payment there has been nothing, the phone number does not work and I have no reply from his 3 email accounts. Seller's name is Darren Pickering, not sure if anyone here would have heard of him? I've been trying to make excuses for him, on holiday or ill? Poss sold them on to someone else at a higher price, but seems really iffy. Paid by paypal so have reported the issue and raised a claim. Fingers crossed I don't get my fingers burnt and would be a shame to miss out on the cams.
