New Exhaust

Post by Ferg » Sat Jun 23, 2012 10:50 pm

I decided that after the exhaust on the Elise developed several holes in its original janspeed, that a standard replacement wasn't going to cut it.

So given the time contraints with TT and that I couldn't justify 2Bular money anyway, I went for an EP exhaust. The quality is pretty good, neat welds and once aligned the fitment is very good. Had some issues with tight joints but that was it. Had to drill out the studs on the cat which was an unexpected joy, not.

Looking forward to taking it for a run tomorrow and finding out what it sounds like. The noise at idle anda quick blip sounds throatier than before. :thumbsup

Well done Ferg.

My understanding is that these are on the loud side. More than one of our number has been sidelined from an English trackday as a result, so be ready to get it re-packed ;-)

I have an original design BlueFlame stainless steel number, which they no longer make due to space tolerances, however it's a belter and as a result I got it stainless-welded when it started to let go (rather than replace it). The later spec BlueFlame is a good effort too, I believe, but again is a little noisier.

Anyway it's all subjective and at least you are mobile for TT next weekend :-)

I had their full system om my S1 and is indeed a quality bit of kit. Came in at 96Db at 1m when noise tested so not that loud. Made by simpson racing IIRC for Elise parts.

I got the 6" version so it's a little quieter and also permits for further modifications later without chanig the exhaust again. The car is on a standard manifold and standard cat so the noise should be fine. Apparantly adding a CRP is what makes it really loud.

My car used to whisper exhuast wise so I'm hoping this will add a good bit of growl more suited to a sports car. I'll find out today.

But not unless you enjoy headaches. Every time you brake (roof off), the unburnt fuel fumes will roll across into the cockpit from the back of the car and it gets pretty nauseating after a while.

I may even have a stainless CRP for sale (shipped with my exhaust years back, and never used after the experiences above with the previous one!)

Does a cat process unburnt fuel? Thought excess fuel wasn't good for them?

Plan to eventually get a sports cat, but let me know if you do, I may be interested. :thumbsup

Yep, I realise the paradox here, but all I can say is that the smell of a "rich mixture" was definitely there during the brief period that I used a CRP (about a year until Stelvio 2001...VERY glad I had it reinstalled for that!).

By all means give it a go...but just wanted to mention. The higher amounts of CO probably lead to the headaches...but it's an individual thing :-)

i have an S1 cat pipe in the garage if you want one.

I could never smell the fuel in the cabin, Campbell is the first person i've heard that suffered from that, but the person following you certainly will smell it.

Same here, no smell in the cabin, but a very black exhaust, and remarks from following cars that I am trying to poison them.

:damnfunny Did anyone actually catch you to tell you!? ;)

Took it for a run this morning. Pretty quiet to be honest but I had a number of holes in the factory one. Sounds smooth and not invasive at low revs

I think I had the Janspeed SS with a CRP an never had issues even with the window out. Was a nice warm welcome wash of heat when in the mountains in winter.

Was farking loud though and use to set of the car alarms in my underground car park.

The noise was worth about 25bhp iirc.

It also means your cat gets put in the shed to preserve it for mots. Check out the price of them and you will have it out and some steel in there.

You can always try before you buy.

They did used to be dead expensive IIRC. But £200 gets you a sports cat these days which, while not buttons, is cheap enough to make it accessible. If there was additional horsepower in it though, that would certainly be a good reason to take it out. ;-)

I have a sports cat on mine most of the time. I also have a de-cat pipe that I have used on trackdays, but like Campbell, I notice more fumes coming into the car at times with it fitted. And it also makes things pretty loud; the other half can still here me 5 mins after I leave my house.
