I've been bored again and I have constructed an intercom... My car is now getting to by antisocially loud and hearing things inside is geting hard. So I had a quick google, got onto maplins and constructed a duplex intercom with a simple mixer for the radio....

It remains to be seen if it will actually work, but we'll see....

Pics to follow...

Fantastic!

I really should do something about mine (pile of earplugs or quieten it down) as I supposedly rely on my hearing for work!

It's a little bit "agricultural" inside as my soldering iron is to circuitry what a sledgehammer is to brain surgery....

They fit snugly on the shelf behind the seats, knobs are Radio vol, Intercom vol and intercom preamp gain. Just waiting for my head sets to come through the post. Duno about noise, might need a filter of some sort, but I wait until it is up and runnning first....

If you could get a headset that had a boom mic but used the "in ear" technology that comes with te Sony mobiles it would rock.

On long journeys I use my big "DJ" headphones but reckon they are good at keeping out the noise and that if I had the Sony in ear it would be perfect.

Got some cheap ones off e-bay for now, just to see if it works. If it does I'll look at getting a decent pair of headsets. Might look a bit of a twat but I'll be in the nice and quiet and be able to hold a sensible conversation with my pax!

Other option is get the peltors from work and inset the speakers fomr the cheap headset and install the mic boom. Remains to be see if it works at all..

couldn't you just get a couple of spare pilot helments from work

And if you can, can we go tooling round in them :D

We took a similar thing on the doomed Stevlio 2001 trip - I built a miniature mixer with two preamps (one for each headset mic) - all ran off a 9v battery which was in the same box, barely bigger than a 9V battery. It did have line in so you could then run music off the laptop into the headsets too. Only thing it lacked was an auto-mute so when either of us spoke the music could be turned down automatically.

The headsets we had were sh*t though so actually with the roof off and at moderate speeds it didn't work all that well :-(

That was why we were called "Team Techno" IIRC :-)

Cheers,
Robin

That is basically what this is but in a huge box, no auto mute (Good idea!) or VOX activation (yet!)

Basically I'm sick of the foam in ear plugs and don't want my massive Peltor ear defs in the car.

my helmet has some fantastic detachable peltor ear muffs (as good as the ones at my work) so i am sorted for noise on trackdays. problem is i usually get a sore throat from shouting.

Walshy has some intercom system for his track training days, i'll find out what he uses as its pretty good.
