The needle ws reading between 30 and 140 randomly and wobbling all over the palce, most odd.
Now removing it is simple - remove the binnacle cover, disconnect it, remove the large nut and push the gauge out.
Problem 1 - the binnacle cover.
It's held in with 2 screws and a single bolt.
Bolt is hidden behind 3 looms, all the hvac pipes and the steering column. The Lotus position for 20 mins solved that.
Then simple remove it... it's about 20mm longer in every direction than the gap it needs to come out of...
Apart from in one very awkward orientation upside down, and back to front then it will just about slide out
Sadly everything I've done it, I swear I'll rememer how and never can! Another 20 mins of my life I'll not get back.
Problem 2 - simply remove the speedo
It's been firmly in place for 16 years in a nice snug fitting rubber sleeve.... it was quite happy there thank you very much...
Took some industrial swearing (I had to invent a new word), some industrial lubricant (!) and a lot of pushing adn shoving then it was simply removed. 20 mins again...
Problem 3 - fix it
Same deal as the Porsche units I've had to bits - they are both made by VDO afterall - uncrimp the edge to get in.
That bit went fine, but the front cover is actually glass(?!?) and there is a reset knob through it but the knob is larger than the hole... hmm... turns out there is a tiny setscrew holding it on!
Sadly it was a bit stuck, so I was pushing quite hard... forgetting of course it rotates. Then the blood sacrifice was made.
After that everything went well: part of the spinny round bits had stopped spinning round at the same time as other spinny bits... bit of loctite (Sponsored by the RAF) and a thump put it back together satis.
10 mins later it's all back together.
So next time I'll stab myself earlier in the process and save about 2 hours
