Tyres out of shape - remedies?

Post by campbell » Fri Aug 17, 2012 4:55 pm

No smart answers please. Like "buy new ones"...we have just bought 6 in the last 3 months

Story is, thought a rear wheel bearing was going on the family barge.

Checked it into local independent, whom we use regularly, and they can't fault the bearings. They have, however, found both rear tyres to be "slightly out of shape". Common prob from speed bumps etc apparently...and we do run the car heavily loaded quite regularly which probably increases the risk of this kind of thing.

No action needed, they say, not even on safety grounds. Fair enough. However - is it possible for a tyre fitter to remove and somehow "reshape" the tyre? I assume the steel reinforcement has been mis-shapen by whatever impact, but perhaps if re-worked, refitted and reinflated, it will improve the situation? The drone on the m-way is only drowned out by the bickering of the kids from time to time ;-)

Yours in hope

No remedy except a tyre change
In some cases you can balance the wheels to counteract the problem
I have just changed the jeep tyres after a year of barging speed bumps around Crieff Hydro
The tyre fitter was laughing at the shape of the tyres and asked if I had noticed any strange traits when driving

The jeep now feels like a new car with no wobbles/noises and steering pull

Edinburgh City Council said there are over £280m worth of claims Uk wide for pothole damage to tyres and wheels

Thanks guys.

60 profiles would involve wheel drop to 16" Sanj - at a guess. Not really on the radar.

Think we will need to reconsider our load-carrying (!) and for time being, try to live with the 50p piece shapes until they have worn to 2mm. Just threw the fat end of £500 at tyres in the last wee while and the cupboard is bare save for emergencies!

Campbell if it's only one end/one side you could try swapping the wheels around the car - whilst it won't make the tyres round it might change the noise it makes in the cabin :-)

It's probably worth getting willie to do best-effort rebalance.

Cheers,
Robin

The rears are worst but apparently the fronts have suffered a little too.

Makes sense - rears have been on longer and also take most of the strain of full loading. This would certainly be a no-cost option, which is nice.

But yes, I'll speak to Willie at some point.

My other strategy is to set pressures low - allowing some sidewall flex - then heat things up with a 20 mile m-way run. The immediately inflate to max allowed pressures - to remove flex - then run home, slower, letting things cool. The hope is this will help the steel re-shape a little but that is all probably in vain of course!

I doubt over this temperature range you will have any effect at all on the elasticity of steel ...

Never heard of this before.
What make of tyre and are they the correct load rating?
If the tyres are new (or newish) why haven't you taken them back to the supplier?

Toyo T1-R. I certainly ordered the correct load rating - naturally I should check what they shipped, eh! Not the sort of thing you look at after the fact though...

Done far too many miles for supplier (Camskill) to be interested in replacing, I reckon. No way I can prove they were defective when new, for example. Other than a bit of resonance, they are still doing the job and the rabble (from the kids) generally drowns it out, LOL. At least that's what Lisa says.
