Brake calipers nlc

Post by ed » Sun Aug 19, 2012 11:44 am

The wife's xtrail needs a new front passenger side brake caliper as its seized.

Am I ok to buy a non Nissan caliper and run this in conjunction with the remaining nissan caliper on the drivers side? Or is it best to swap both? Cheers ed :thumbsup

As long as they are the same size piston then yes.
Why not strip, clean and rebuild the old one? It's really not hard with a kit - I promise!

This is Ed we're talking about ...

Ed, take it to a Nissan dealer and say "brakes don't work". They will then return it with working brakes and you'll be happy to know that when the brakes fail and the Mrs plunges off the cliff it wasn't your fault :-)

You'll be fine fitting the one calliper, but beware of ebay generic callipers - a friend had some delivered to work and they were quite clearly made from recycled alloys - the casting was terrible, the material felt brittle and the whole calliper felt like it weighed half as much as the OEM part. If you're getting a pattern part from a motor factors it'll be fine - they tend not to sell the utter dross that passes for car parts on ebay ;-) Even so before fitting new calliper have a quick peek to make sure they appear to be similar castings with similar weight.

Cheers,
Robin

What he said /\

Also check the pistons are the same before you fit the new caliper, I had one recently fitted with a much longer piston than it should have been.

Calipers form a factors will usually be overhauled OEM units anyway and are a good bet.

There's a motorfactors out by CLCM that should do an exchange, but lets face it, you're not going to take it off yourself.

Seafield coachworks by Leith Links were excellent when I used them, by why not pick up the phone and ask a dealer what they would charge?
