Hi all, drove my car today for approx 1 mile to pick some stuff up, when I came out the shop 10 mins later I tried to restart the car only for it to keep cranking over but it's not starting, fuel pump is priming so I'm thinking it's most likely the coil. Anyone have any similar problems and find a solution?
The car does start to misfire after it's been sat in heavy rain over night, not sure if it's related

pull out a HT fit a plug lay it on the cam cover where the thread can earth, turn [a friend helps here] the engine and see if you get a spark, if not you could try a new coil [they do go down not infrequently] but I;d also fit new leads plugs, dizzy and rotor, they are all service parts.

Or do the simple thing first - check for fuel!

Typical, the car has apparently fixed itself, only after I bought a new coil (not fitted of course)

Water ingress into plug bores is common on S1 with rubbish HT cover plate that leaks water in but then traps it so that it won't dry out.

Check for moisture or evidence of moisture in the plug bores. If there is any evidence, dry out the bores ... with hair dryer but obviously leave the plugs in to avoid blowing debris into cylinder.

Consider replacing dizzy cap, rotor arm and HT leads if they haven't been changed recently to your knowledge.

You might be able to return coil.

I'd keep the coil, even if the old one is working they do tire,

- it wasn't expensive was it?

To horrify you - my engines run coils [4] that cost £600!

no, they weigh 190gmm each, but they have a very fast rise time..... which some no doubt will appreciate...

After reading so much about ignition woes on the S1 I did this (plus plugs) right after I bought mine as I was planning to use daily. Touch wood, not had any electrical issues since and it made the engine feel sprightlier. The magnecor leads I replaced with seem to have a better seal round the hole in the cam cover too so less likely hood of water ingress when using in all weathers.

replacing ht leads every year with plugs and dizzy will always make the car feel livelier. OEM type leads do deteriorate.
