Aberdeen GEO

Post by jimbo » Thu Oct 11, 2012 8:07 pm

Need my Geo done quite soon after having steering rack reconditioned etc. Anywhere good in Aberdeen? Don't really have the time to drive down to Edinburgh.

What should I go for? Ali recommended a "fast road" setup, thinks the 340R settings will chew through tires...

Also, any idea what it should cost?

Cheers

James

Provisionally booked in for this Friday. But... Have been quoted anywhere between £125 and £375 depending on how easy they find it to do. Really? That about right?

For them... yes.

Do they have shims for the camber? To be fair the camber can't change so all they are really doing is setting the toe. Hope for the lower end but I'd insist on watching.

Not a dig at them. They must have done a fair few by now so you hope they know what's going to need done. Geo prices in Engerland are less but then there is much more competition.

Yeah they have all the shims there. I just thought it was pretty pricey tbh :(

It is :) but I'm firmly in the 'pay a guy with a machine to do it' faction.

Hope it wasn't £375! That's a hell of a price for a Geo on an elise!

Isn't CLCM in Edinburgh about £50-75 and they have a great reputation?

That's in the ball park of what I paid recently,... IIRC. Agree, Over £100 seems steep for a geo.

Need to be a little careful with generalising what constitutes a "geo"...

Measuring what's on there is one task,
Altering Toe is a cheap and quick task if nothing is seized
Altering camber is cheap and quick if you have shims and nothing is seized
Altering castor is a little more involved.
Then you get into dynamic measurements if you want to go that far (bump steer, etc)

Multiply timings if anything is seized and needs drilled/fixed etc. I had an upright that needed sent out to an engineering firm to drill out and fix when bolts sheared in it.

Agree a simple measure, then toe and camber setup shouldn't be over £100 if everything loosens off okay.

Couldn't manage last Friday in the end, so its booked in today. But... Got there and realised I can't find the locking wheel nut!! Ali at SLS had lt last, about 6 weeks ago when I got the steering rack etc done but ive just called him and he can't find it.

Any suggestions very welcome....

They said they can still do the geo check with the wheels on, but will obviously need the wheel nut key to do any work

I managed to remove a locking wheel nut with one of these http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PI ... tAodYQMA-g when the tool snapped in the nut.
Took ages mind you, and had to chisel off the outer ring of the nut as it was spinning, then had to build the nut up with some weld for the tool to grip onto, not something I want to repeat in a hurry.
Wasn't an Elise btw.
